I've seen some people be saying that Sigyn in the Norse Myths is a ' tradwife '
Me : * LAUGHING SO FUCKING HARD MY SIDES ALMOST HURTS FROM LAUGHING SM *
Think about it, would ANYONE who is a valkyrie and/or valkurie veteran, volva, a FUCKING VICTORY AND FIDELITY GODDESS, and WHO LITERALLY WENT, ' FUCK IT ' AND WILLINGLY STAYED WITH LOKI DURING RAGNAROK, HOLDING HER SHIELD ABOVE HER HEAD TO PREVENT POISON DRIPPING ONTO HIM, WOULD BE A TRADWIFE?!?!?!?!
Yeah, I don't think so
Srsly in the Norse Myths Sigyn is a REBEL, and came to be a symbol of those who stood up for those who are ostracized for whatever unjust reason, and she is ONE OF THE DEITIES WHOM ANCIENT NORDICS PRAY TO FOR VICTORIES ONE WAY OR ANOTHER
And Sigyn becomes an icon in Iceland FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. I literally get ' oddball ' energy in spades from Sigyn in the Norse Myths
And being a volva, Sigyn in the Norse Myths ofc came to feel connected with nature and mythical related stuff
She won't even have time to even care about haters, honestly. In fact, she doesn't care much of what others think of her
Sigyn also came to be a symbol of those who do whatever they can to help their loved ones who are once in astray be back on a right path
Like she WILL NOT stand by and do nothing regarding issues that matter to HER and to her LOVED ONES
Yes, Sigyn in the Norse Myths is a girlboss - a compassionate and empathetic girlboss

Read several books about Loki and Sigyn, which were marked with hashtag âjustice for sigynâ. All of them are written by really talented people (Iâm often baffled by situations when fans write better stories than professional writers â why do the latter get their money?). After reading I canât agree on some specific points in these books that rubbed me wrong.
Contains spoilers!
Cat Rector âThe Goddess of Nothing at allâ â the story is strong. A well-written book, pleasure to read. But. Even here, on Tumblr, I read lots of meta and criticism âAngrboda wasnât Lokiâs mistress! She was his wife before Sigyn!â. And the author goes this standard way âAngrboda is Lokiâs mistressâ. It works for this story, but itâs in lots and lots of books about Norse myths! Why NOT make her a mistress? Why go a typical way? The ending â I loved the ending. A new All-mother Sigyn â chefâs kiss.
Nicki Chapelway âThe Harbinger of the endâ (1st book) â an interesting take on Volsung saga, the adventures were really engaging. But, frankly, I didnât understand why Sigyn fell in love with Loki. I mean, they never had any meaningful conversations or actions between two of them to start love. She just decides âIâm a wife, I must love him, and also heâs handsomeâ. Thatâs it! Next morning she acts as if sheâs deeply in love with him. It seemed as if the author wanted to go into slowburn, but didnât manage to pull it off and just jumped to the moment when theyâre already in love.
Lyra Wolf âTruth and other liesâ â again, whereâs Sigyn as the Goddess of Victory? So much for all these cries in the internet and on Tumblr specifically âbut sheâs not the Goddess of Fidelity! Marvel just made it up!â. Then WHY use this trope? Not saying itâs a bad idea in and on itself, but itâs so established in general publicâs mind. Why not change it? Why not at least combine these two elements â fidelity AND victory?
Surprisingly, only Melvin Burgess writes Sigyn as the Goddess of Victory. Burgess! It was the single thing I liked in this book. Of course, he didnât give justice to her, but at least he named her title right.
Of course, I guess, nothing can beat the Marvel comics â theyâre the first to blame for this Fidelity mess and general treatment of Sigyn. Lots of nowadays popular books are based on comics portrayal. I believe fan books should go as far from these typical Logyn tropes as possible.
Who needs sticks and coal when you have a literal human fire source lol
I says what I says
When you have the potential to write one of the most epic and touching love story⌠but youâd rather turn it into abuse ^^â I said Marvel, but that goes for Sandman, Magnus Chase & Gospel of Loki. Actually, the Sigyn from MC FLEES when she sees Loki XDXD GOOD FOR HER, I guess XD
So this is how Gospel!Loki sees his Sigyn
(Thank you to @yoursaviourhasarrived for this scan)
Before I start speaking about Sigyn, may I just say?
ANGIE??? For real??? HER NAME IS ANGRBODA. NOT âAngieâ⌠how ridiculous is that? PLEASE. That is so⌠American⌠(sorry for my American friends, but XD)
Also, his mistress? THAT IS HIS FIRST WIFE. HE WAS MARRIED TO ANGRBODA. Stop changing the place of Lokiâs wives to fit your narrative.Â
Which means that, well⌠Angrboda was IN THE PAST, when Loki meant Sigyn. âAngieâ is his ex, not his mistress..
âAngieâ ⌠SERIOUSLY XDXD
Now, about Sigyn.
Things that Gospel!Loki hates about Sigyn:
- her cooking : Why? Is it bad? I DONâT THINK SO.
- her love for Bragiâs luth-playing: LOL. Why? Are you jealous, Loki? ^^â COME ON, SING A SONG TO YOUR WIFE.
- her attention and curious affinity with wildlife of all sort: Ahum⌠You mean that LOKI, who loves to turn himself into random animals, and is linked to many animals, ⌠would hate his wife for talking to animals, and would not agree with her when she says that the little mousie could help them one day?
THAT LOKI IS AN IDIOT.
Random poll : Who is the worst Loki
-Gospel!Loki
- Old!Comics!Loki
Pretty sure Ratatoskr would be BFFs with this Sigyn <3
Ratatoskr: If your bloddy husband keeps being rude, just tell me, and Iâll bite him in the nuts!
Sigyn: You shall do no such thing
Ratatoskr: TRY AND STOP ME
As for the monogamy thing⌠AS IF LOKI WAS THE ONLY GOD WITH SEVERAL WIVES/LOVE INTERESTS.
You know who got other ladies in their lives? ODIN AND THOR.
And itâs not only the men! The goddesses too got lovers: Idunn, Sif, Frigg, Freya⌠SIF GOT A KID FROM A MAN WHO IS NOT THOR, and itâs ok!!!
Mrs Harris, did you even READ the Eddas? âLokasennaâ, does it ring any bells to you???Â
Anyway, Gospel!Loki complaining about Sigyn being basically a Disney Princess seems SO ridiculous⌠All the things that Harris pretends Loki would complain about, are pretty much the SAME THINGS Myth!Loki (& possibly MCU!Loki?) would find endearing and cute.
*Gospel!Sigyn baking her pies and talking to her mice friends and making friends that could one day help them*
Gospel!Loki *dramatic sigh*: See what I have to deal with, folks? Sheâs so annoying and pathetic! I need a REAL woman, like AngieâŚ
Myth!Loki, fangirling: SHE IS SO CUTE!!!! ⌠Wait, who are you calling âAngieââŚ
Gospel!Loki: Why, my mistress, AngrbodaâŚ
Myth!Loki, laughing: YOU CALL HER âANGIEâ TO HER FACE AND YOU ARE STILL ALIVE??? How is this even possible XDXD
MCU!Loki: Well, if you donât want your Sigyn, Iâll take her. Sheâs a Disney!Princess, I am a Disney!Prince. It is MEANT TO BE. Iâll trade you a Sylvie for your Sigyn, do we have a deal? :)
Gospel!Loki: Whatâs a âSylvieâ?
Sylvie: OH NO YOU DONâT. Iâd rather have the princess, anyway.
MCU!Loki: You canât. I called dibs on her!
Sylvie: Well too late, mate! Bye!
Joanne Harris says that Loki is the one saying all those mean things about Sigyn, not HER⌠Girl, if any god whispered all those lies into your ear, THAT IS NOT LOKI.
Iâd bet on Odin⌠Heâs god of poetry, same as Bragi⌠and I can see him still pretty PISSED at Sigyn for siding with Loki, instead of being a good little Valkyrie, and fight by her kingâs sideâŚÂ
Loki would NEVER insult his wife like this. And most of all, he would never insult the ONE AND ONLY person who stayed by his side and helped him in that dark cave.Â
And all the stuff âLokiâ reproached Sigyn, they would be on the âNoâ list for ODINâŚ. Talking to animals, loving music, gossiping and cooking? XD Why would Loki hate that? ^^â Itâs utterly ridiculous, and 100% out-of-character for him.
To all the people thinking Sigyn is weak, a victim, ânot importantâ, or âless interesting than Angrboda because her kids looked like Aesirsâ⌠May I remind you sheâs Goddess of VICTORY.
Even Google knows that.
So stop spreading your misrepresentation about her and start writing her as the BADASS Valkyrie, incantation fetter and goddess she is supposed to be.Â
Thank you!
hi stefâĄ
I know you've read many norse-mythology-related books but have you ever read the Magnus Chase series? If you have, what do you think of them? And if you haven't, what other norse-mythology-related books do you reccomend? Other than Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology.
In English that is..
Thank you so much and have a great day deaaarrâĄ
Heyho there, love!
I have heard of the Magnus Chase series, I think it's written for children, no? Not that it matters, I might give it a try one day!
And yes, I definitely have some recommendations for you!
Non-fiction:
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (I know you mentioned it but I had to put it on the list đ )
The Prose Edda, Penguin Classics Edition
The Poetic Edda, translated by Jackson Crawford (I also recommend his Youtube channel!)
The Norse Myths by Carolyne Larrington
The Penguin Book of Norse Myths
Fiction:
Loki, A Bad God's Guide To Being Good by Louie Stowell (a comic novel like Diary of a Whimpy Kid, hilarious)
To love a god by Evie Kent
The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris
The Testament of Loki by Joanne M. Harris
Runemarks by Joanne M. Harris
Runelight by Joanne M. Harris
The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec (I recently finished that one, itâs SO good!)
The Goddess of Nothing at All (on my TBR list, can't wait to read this one)
Truth and other Lies by Lyra Wolf (one of the best Loki books out there, really recommend the audio book!)
I have a few more buuuut those are in German. đ
I'd recommend that you read as many different versions of the Poetic and Prose Edda as possible though because the translations do vary a little.
This is what I can think of from the top of my head, you should definitely also check out my Goodreads profile, I have a Norse Mythology and a Loki shelf and I'm constantly growing my library (even though Iâm slow with updating and not all books are on there yet)! đ¤ Happy Reading!
When you have the most beautiful and touching love story in all mythology, but youâd rather depict it as abuse ^^â
WHY @marvelentertainmentâ
You know, the more I think about the Gospel of Loki the more I hate it. At first the anger was mostly depicted at how Sigyn was portrayed. Like I saw how she was described in the character list, got a bad feeling and after reading a couple of chapters gave up and skipped ahead and read the scene with Lokiâs punishment to see how she was portrayed. And oh boy was that bad, unique, but still so bad. Couldnât finish the book after that I was pissed off.
But the more Iâve thought about it, the more the whole Loki is a demon pisses me off too, maybe even more than the Sigyn stuff.
Like why in hell would you make the very Norse god Loki a demon, a creature from Christianity a whole other religion. Where is the logic in this decision? Honestly that choice is really insulting especially considering Christianity and Norseâs history. And how Loki was never considered a good or bad God by the original Norse people, but thanks to Christianity has been demonized and made the bad guy. And donât even get me started on how wrong it is that Loki doesnât love his kids. There is a reason his son were killed as part of his punishment. I just canât believe someone with such a fundamental misunderstanding about Loki would write a novel about him.
Honestly itâs like the author saw how Snorri brought in Christian illusions in his writing down of the myths and went thatâs what Loki needs- more Christianity! Then again I suppose I should have seen this coming, the title is called the Gospel of Loki.
Honestly I thought Marvel gave us the worst depiction of Sigyn and Lokiâs relationship but this book really takes the cake. Even Marvel knew to keep Loki as a giant and they love to just ignore Norse mythology. The only good thing Gospel of Loki did was was the whole animals follow Sigyn around like a Disney Princess. But even that she fucks up later by making her like the snake hurting Loki. I hope Loki finds her and kicks her ass one day.
So, I was asked to expand on the âSigyn as Norse Goddess of Victoryâ theory on a Mythology blog, and add references or otherwise elaborate.Â
The blog could not handle my long rambling, so I am going to post my answer here, it will be much easier for everyone, I think ;)
That theory is based first of all on Sigynâs name. As you know, names in Norse mythology have meanings and are important.
âGlutâ means âglowâ as sheâs a FIRE giantess. 'Angrbodaâ means âBringer of griefâ, as she gives birth to the âmonstersâ that will bring Ragnarok and kill the gods. And 'Sigynâ means 'Friend of Victoryâ⌠I read someone thought it was meant in an âironicalâ way⌠but why would it be âironicalâ for her, and not for the others?
Then, there is this one archeological remain weâve got, that shows her and Loki, in their usual scene (Lokiâs punishment). At the bottom (west side) of the Gosforth Cross (mid-11th century), located in Cumbria, England, you can see a representation of Sigyn, holding the bowl to protect Loki. If you look at her hair cut, itâs typical of the Viking warriors when they went to battle⌠So yeah. Warrior!Sigyn for the win ^^â In the links, you will find three articles Iâve found for you. The article in French is really interesting, and talks about the Gosforth Cross. They also have this theory about the  âlittle friendâ part of her name meaning she accompanied the warriors to war⌠as part of her duties as Goddess of Victory. Nowadays, the theory that Sigyn is/was Goddess of Victory for the Norse mythology is so popular that if your just google âNorse goddess of Victoryâ, her name will come up first :p Just try!
The main problem with Sigyn is that because of Marvel and their (unfair!!!) representation of her, people are under the impression she was this weak, meek creature, abused by Loki, a âdoormatâ for him to yell at, cheat on, and humiliate. And though there is nothing that confirms that in the source material (Eddas, Voluspa, âŚ), writers keep on propagating this image of her â Neil Gaiman, Joanne Harris, Rick Riordan⌠ They all picture Sigyn as a victim of Loki, ignoring the fact that in the Lokasenna, Loki insults all the Gods (Odin, Frigga, Freya, Feyr, Thor, Idunn⌠EVERYONE), but not Sigyn. And in return, none of the gods speak Sigynâs name, while they could have used her against Loki. Had Loki really hated his wife, or despised her, you know she would not have escaped his wrath. As for Sigyn, she would not have helped him had he been such a bully â duty or not.Â
There is this very interesting theory in the second article I joined to this post, and Iâll just leave you with that quote⌠because, it does make sense, when you think about it. âIt is interesting that the battle of Ragnarok is predicted to be a stalemate, with both sides losing. Many gods and giants will fight to the death, killing one another, and in the end, the world will be lost. It is thought that perhaps no one can win because Sigyn has divided loyalties and cannot choose a victor.â

Loki: Yes, yes. I suppose The Gospel of Loki is a fine tale but I really must protest...
Fenrir waving its tale: Vuf. Orm, Sleipnir and I wanna add... He really is a good Dad. Who's a good dad. Mine is. Mine. The best.
Hel: Never looks me wrong like the others like I was some emo thing. He loves us as ourselves. And walks through Hel to visit us. Narfi and Vali agree.
Sigyn: He is unfaithful but always... ALWAYS comes back to me. Never treats me bad or puts me down. He is gentle and kind. On Aesir standards he really is the best of husbands. Even takes me shopping, gladly and has fun. We've been together for thousands of years and we still love each other.
Loki: We do.
Names in Norse mythology have meanings and are important. âGlutâ means âglowâ as sheâs a FIRE giantess. 'Angrbodaâ means âBringer of griefâ, as she gives birth to the âmonstersâ that will bring Ragnarok and kill the gods. And 'Sigynâ means 'Friend of Victoryâ⌠I read someone thought it was meant in an âironicalâ way⌠WHY WOULD IT BE IRONICAL FOR HER AND NOT FOR THE OTHERS??? It makes no sense, mostly if you remember how sheâs pictured on the Gosforth cross, with a warrior hairdo. Stop pretending Sigyn is/was a victim, when clearly, all clues show us that she is not. Also, LOKI LOVES HER AND THEIR KIDS. And why wouldnât he? Sheâs the only one to stand by his side in his hour of need. Whatâs not to love? Even if you depict him as your main antagonist, remember: even villains can have loved ones.
I am reading The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris and loving every moment!
Hereâs my take on the lovable trickster
If I had a dime for every time a Pop Culture writer portrayed Loki thinking of/or treating Sigyn in a bad way, or Sigyn being a doormat, Iâd be a freakin millionaire right nowâŚbut it still wouldnât fix my problem with how Pop Culture continues to stick with this poor narrative for Loki and Sigyn.
FUCK YOU! AND FUCK YOUR TRAIN!!! *gently knocks over train model set*
Rick, Loki better be on that list

crazy how the hard ass line "i am judge, jury and theif." came from the same loser that said "my brain refused to get out of my head. inconsiderate brain."
Loki likes to trick Sigyn into having the most randomest conversations at night to make the moment last longer. And worst of all he is always successful in doing so, everytime!
Even if Sigyn is at the brink of passing out of exhaustion he always makes her laugh, but that's nothing he can't do in the daytime either. She has to put up with him all night til he, himself is all tired out.
Loki is like her third child and somehow Sigyn just puts up with it like a champ!
According to what I wrote in my notes app on the 21st of December, 2021. (With comments)
â
Poseidon: Obviously fish. Heâs a fishy boy, just arrived from Greece, landed like fresh tilapia. (This is a Rupaulâs drag race reference, but I have no idea who said this.) Maybe a bit like saltwater?
Adam: Iâd say grass but the most likely answer is animal shit. (I mean, he is surrounded by them.)
Eve: Flowers. And animal shit.
Loki: Your ex bfâs sweater, or e-boy perfume.
Raiden: Sweaty rice (???)
Kojiro: Burning wood or forest.
Thor: Your fingers after you touched that static ball that makes your hair stand up.
Buddha: It is cannon that he smells good, best bet flowers and sugar.
Aphrodite: Milk. (I donât think I was implying anything weird with that either, she just gave that vibe. I probably specifically strawberry milk or rose or champagne would fit better.)
Geir: Teenage anxiety. (god bless her soul.)
Heracles: Also sweat, with a hint of BBQ sauce.
Hemidal: Metal, the good kind. (whatever that means?)
Parvati, Kali, Durga: Smoothies, Cola, Fresh Laundry (In order. I like grouping them together :] )
Socrates: Unidentifiable.
Jesus: Wine, duh.
Confucius: Flower-scented stationary.
Zerofuku (Baby): Puppy breath. (I have no idea what this smells like btw but I heard itâs actually good.)
Zerofuku: Shattered dreams.
Ares: Comedy. (?????)
Zeus: The inside of that one unopened, unwashed water bottle you left on your bedside drawer for awhile.
Brunhilde: Sheâd kill you before you even get a whiff.
Jack The Ripper: London rain or a tea soaked cigarette.
Odin: Your grandpaâs old army uniform.
Hermes: The inside of a wooden instrument.

So how Loki's splitting thing works while he's chained is that he cant wield a weapon
But if we apply the same rules as Frigg's blessing thing with Baldur it only works for weapons that were invented at the time he was chained.....
So ....
Lets give Loki a gun
