The Key To Character Design In Veggietales
-Introduction-Â
Veggietales was an American television program on air from 1993-2015 popular for its christian themes, distinct humor and 3d animated style. Despite this, arguably the most important element of Veggietales was its easily recognizable cast of characters. So what made the design of these characters so timeless and memorable?
-Color and Interrelationships-
Color in character design is arguably one of the most important aspects in making a character easily recognizable and show the viewer who the character is. In Veggietales they use color to show the relations between characters. For example, Larry is the exact opposite on the color wheel as Bob signifying that they're supposed to be complete opposites in personality and often at odds with each other. The colors weren’t selected randomly however, color also displays the two character’s opposing personalities. Red is a passionate, dominating and angry color which correlates to Bob's powerful demeanor, common sense and anxiousness. On the other hand, Larry is an easygoing and happy character signified by his green coloration.
-Shape and Simplicity-
Another important aspect of character design is the shape of a character. Squares are usually level-headed, circles are usually strange and triangles are usually cunning. Bob on paper should be shaped mostly using squares to signify stability, but paradoxically he's shaped like a circle as to highlight the interesting contrast between his level-headedness and childish sarcasm. While still a circle, Larry is an elliptical circle which is an odd and humorous shape.
The character designs are but also have recognizable differences which them easily memorable. Bob's body is a circle with four circles for his eyes/pupils and one adaptable shape for his mouth. The uniformity and simplicity of each character’s color is also a contributing factor, not just shape. If put on a 2d grid Bob is one red and Larry is two greens, on their own they mean nothing but paired together they’re immediately recognizable.

Veggietales, accidentally or not, uses recognizable, simple shapes and colors to wordlessly tell you who the characters are and make them stick in your memory.Â

Well, ya'll have spoken, so here's my human VeggieTales OC Samantha!
She's a 27 year old college graduate who moved into the house where the Veggies lived
Th Veggies didn't want a human to be living in the house, and Sam didn't want to leave because said house was the only thing she could afford.
So Bob struck a deal with her: Help him film and produce a kids show, and she can live there as long as she wants.
At first, Sam wasn't thrilled at the idea, but over the years, she started to love doing the show and working with the Veggies. She even gave acting a try and starred in a couple episodes.

As far as I'VE heard the veggies do not have souls. They aren't allowed to go to heaven, or at least, none of them imply that they CAN. The early stuff is mostly Old Testament stuff so they don't have to actually talk about it but the Veggies probably go to hell.

The similarities between these two kings are uncanny
Long ago, I have met a nijitsune girl named Kitsune-chan on Discord last year on late-September. We've been bonding as friends for a very long time, and she has interests in VeggieTales too! She would make drawings of a few VT characters in anime-like style, and I find it amazing and adorable! And then, she eventually drew a veggiesona of her own, and I later thought "What if I could make a model of her and show how good of a modeler I am so far?", so I did!
This is Kitsune-chan the rhubarb! A veggiesona of her's in 3D made to impress her as she doesn't use Blender like I do, but it's worth modeling! Credit goes to @sailor-strawberry-moon!
Relating to my previous post, here's Aimer and Yu-Jun's full body pics! (humanized versions and backstories under cut)
Aimer DeCÅ“ur is a small, 12-year-old rhubarb from Canada who speaks both French and English, and is also an avid LarryBoy fangirl. She's very outgoing, happy-go-lucky, and, to a certain degree, kind of a hopeless romantic. She has a twin sister, Mauvaise, who abused her until her parents divorced when she and Mauvaise were 7, and subsequently her father (who was a pure soul like her) took custody of her while her mother (who was equally as bad as her sister) took custody of Mauvaise.
Yu-Jun Rang (Korean: ìœ ì¤€ëž‘; Simplified Chinese: 柳俊朗) is Aimer's best friend, a 13-year-old Korean radish who is, ethnically, half-Korean-half-Chinese. She's inquisitive, thoughtful, and you could say she's the Bob to Aimer's Larry. She has a brother, 17-year-old Bog-Ji Rang, who, although he is stoic and can get aggressive if he has to, is very caring to Yu-Jun and those Yu-Jun is close to. Unlike the majority of Bumblyburg, which is primarily Christian, Yu-Jun and her family are of the Taoist faith, which teaches that all living creatures ought to live in a state of harmony with the universe, and the energy found in it.
Despite their many differences, Yu-Jun and Aimer are best friends, and nothing can separate them at all!
In light of the recent news about an upcoming LarryBoy film, I decided to draw my OC, Aimer (as a human lol), being the fangirl she is about it, while her best friend, Yu-Jun (also a human in this picture) is telling her not to get her hopes up lmao

He voiced the utau you see here, while I helped design and oto that same utau! Sure, his pronunciation isn't great, but all-in-all Cmanloid's a clear, easy-to-use and easy-to-comprehend voicebank, and I highly recommend him!
