Every other Friday, Joyce brings home a roll of film from Melvald’s.

She’s done it since Jonathan was eight. Fridays are her payday, and, before Lonny can spend away all their money on whatever he’s trying to drown himself in that week, Joyce buys groceries, a pack of cigarettes for herself, and a roll of film for Jonathan.

He goes through the stuff like fire in a forest, and even though it’s expensive, she never complains about the cost. He’s quiet, her firstborn, quiet in a way that isn’t quite natural for boys his age. He’s quiet, and he looks at the world with suspicion and fear. He’s already learned to be wary, to have caution at any kindness, and if Joyce lets herself think about it too much, she ends up crying.

So she doesn’t think about it. She doesn’t think about how she should shove Lonny out the door. She doesn’t think about how much better it would be for her children if their father was gone, even if it would be scarier for her. Joyce just buys more film, because the only time Jonathan isn’t on guard is when he’s behind a camera, and he deserves a few moments of peace in the week.

It’s the least she can do for continuing to trap them in a terrible situation.

But Joyce stopped giving him film when they came to California. She stopped because Jonathan doesn’t carry his camera anymore. She isn’t even sure he unpacked it. His fingers still move like he’s looking for it, and she can see him lining up shots in his head. But no camera ever emerges, and Jonathan stops having moments where he’s relaxed.

Joyce doesn’t want to worry, because Jonathan seems to be relaxed all the time. He’s always walking around with an easy sway to his shoulders, and a funny, but sweet, best friend at his side. That’s good, isn't it? Isn’t this why she moved them away?

But something about it feels wrong. Something feels like he’s still hiding, but in a new way. She wants to ask why. Why is he acting so strangely? Why would he stop? Why doesn’t he want to go to NYU anymore?

Why is Jonathan giving up on his dreams?

But Joyce can’t find the words, so she doesn’t ask. It’s already so hard, and if he’s okay, then it’s okay. Even if something inside tells her it really really isn't.

But she continues to buy a new roll every other Friday, carefully stacking them on the shelf in her closet for when her son finds himself again.

Imagine if you will, my take on Jonathan meeting Mike for the first time:

Jonathan Byers was nine when Will met his best friend in the whole world. And for all of the thirty days between hearing about Mike and meeting him he was insanely jealous.

He was all Will talked about, he’d talk about all the things they did in kindergarten that day. All the things Mike told him, how Mike loved his drawings and begged to keep some. Will was a preening peacock at the attention.

Jonathan was puffing his cheeks out in a pout for thirty days until Mrs.Wheeler called his mom up and asked if they’d watch Mike? There was a family thing and they’d been meaning to plan a play date anyway.

Joyce had happily accepted, and offered to pick him up if they needed. So Jonathan and Lonnie had watched Will bounce in the entrance way so fast he was practically a battery.

“He’s never been that excited about anything” Lonnie drawled blankly, raising an eyebrow. Maybe he and Joyce should have let him do daycare, if Will was this excited about one new person. It was weird.

“It’s just a five year old, nothing special” Jonathan grumbled, Lonnie looked at the puffed out cheek. Poking one, Jonathan whined and swatted at the hand.

“Somebody is green cause Willy has a new friend” Lonnie pointed out, ears perking up when he heard the sound of tires on gravel. Joyce was here, with the mystery Mike.

If possible Will hopped faster and raced to the door, waiting on tip toes as the door was unlocked and Joyce’s smiling face came out. And a small, smaller then Jonathan but definitely taller then Will, pile of black curls peeked out from behind her knees.

Will jumped, literally jumped, and grabbed Mike. He didn’t have to, Mike was already on his way to do the same the second his eyes had registered the boy in overalls.

“Will!”

They met in the middle, and honestly in Johnathan’s opinion best friend rivals shouldn’t be that adorable it’s just not fair. Jonathan was peeved off at this guy not ten seconds ago.

“Mikey!” Will chirped back, using his toddler strength to sway them side to side. It set off a chain of giggle from the black haired boy. “You’re here, come meet my brother and then I’ll show you my room and my crayons and the yard-”

“Will give him some time to breathe sweetheart” Joyce giggled, charmed as can be by the beaming look on her youngest face. “Welcome to our home Mike honey”

“Thank you Mrs.Byers” Mike nodded, smiling up shyly at her. It made Joyce want to pinch his chubby freckled cheeks. She settled on patting his head and saying your welcome.

Will pulled back and grabbed Mike’s sleeve, leading him to Lonnie and Johnathan. And suddenly Jonathan was subject to the widest black eyes he’d seen on something that wasn’t an owl.

“This is my dad, and that’s Johnathan” Will pointed, like he was showing off a museum exhibit. Lonnie suffocated a snort, it was just another five year old. Albeit the kid was kinda froggy looking so maybe that was what impressed his son so much. He liked frogs. “Meet Mike, it’s short for Michael!”

“Hi” Mike seemed to be more shy, shuffling behind Will despite the fact his head poked over the older boys. “Nice to meet you Mr.Byers and Johntan….”

He tripped on his long name.

Ah fudge, Jonathan couldn’t be jealous of that. It was like holding a grudge on a baby penguin.

“Nice to meet you too Mikey” Lonnie reached a hand down to shake, the boy stumbled over the action but shook it surely. He was scrawny as a pole but he had a good grip.

“No dad you can’t call him Mikey” Will interjected, pouting. Lonnie blinked down a bit incredulously, Will didn’t get pissy about much. “Only i can”

A small burst of giggles escaped out of Jonathan, and they only got worse when Will set a brand new baby glare on him. Geeze.

“You can call me Mike” the black hair boy nodded too, agreeing wholeheartedly with Jonathan’s brother. It was like they were on the same wavelength. “Will talks about you all the time”

Well the sentiment is mutual, you small bag of black curls and striped fabric.

“Have we been snubbed by two five year olds?” Lonnie asked his wife slowly.

“Just a bit” Joyce confirmed, watching Mike drift closer to Jonathan. Curious.

“What’d he tell you?” Jonathan asked the other boy, smiling a little when he stepped out from behind Will.

“You’re the best big brother ever” Mike pointed at one finger, starting a countdown. “You can jump rope up to twenty, you like cats better then dogs, and you like pictures!”

He finished his list, a wide smile breaking out and pushing at his freckles. It lit up his curl framed face.

Awwwww, Jonathan wants to squish him.

And because he’s nine and has less impulse control than his mother, he does.

“Wah?” Mike got out as Jonathan squished his cheeks with his hands. He didn’t seem surprised by the action, which made Jonathan wonder if Will had done the same. “Jo-jo?”

Awwwww, Jonathan wants to keep him. He can be his littler brother.

“Jonathan, you're squishing him!” Will pulled on his brother's shirt.

“You do it all the time” Mike pointed out when Jonathan let go, confirming that his brother had. The apple does not roll far. “Nancy does too”

“Who’s Nancy?” Jonathan asked, walking and waving the two kindergartners to the living room so they could stop clogging the entrance way. His mom shot him a proud look. He looked like a little daycare teacher.

“She’s my big sister….“ Mike huffed, crossing his arms. “She pinches my cheeks though, like auntie Mary”

He’d rather have them squished then pinched.

“Nancy Wheeler?” Jonathan blinked, recognizing a slight resemblance to a girl in his class.

“Uh huh, that’s her” Mike confirmed, and then plopped on the carpet while Will pulled out his coloring supplies from the entertainment center. “She’s a meanie, she tries to put bows in my hair”

Jonathan grimaced in sympathy for the younger boy.

“I don’t like bows, they pull at my hair” Mike pouted, Will patted his back and handed him a piece of paper and a blue crayon. “Thank you Will”

They started coloring, well Will colored. Mike would too but he spent most of his time making shapes and clumsy origami, he offered Jonathan a paper star he made and every last ounce of jealousy drained away.

Mike Wheeler was a good friend to Will, so that made him a good friend with Jonathan too.

"abuse and trauma is not one size fits all."

I agree with the whole thing but that line was really powerful.

Think about that for a moment.

They were both dealt two cards.

Both got one of abuse.

But Jonathan got one of love with his.

And Billy got one of abandonment.

"abuse And Trauma Is Not One Size Fits All."
"abuse And Trauma Is Not One Size Fits All."

just saw a gif set that made my blood boil so let’s chat real quick about how the primary reason Jonathan got the chance to be a cycle-breaker was because Joyce kicked Lonnie out. she cut the thread. she freed her sons. Jonathan was given a safe and supportive environment to process the abuse he’d been subjected to as a child, set boundaries between himself and his abuser that were fortified by Joyce, and express himself without fear of judgement or ridicule by a parent who loves him unconditionally and who was always in his corner. he was able to provide that same support to Will because it was modeled for him by Joyce.

Joyce fought for her children at every turn. Jonathan hid Will, protected him while their mother fought for them. both of those boys knew that Joyce would do anything for them, that she was breaking up her marriage for their safety, that everything she did was with them in mind. she didn’t give the cycle a change to take root. she said absolutely not and dealt with the problem for them, giving them the tools and confidence to stand up to Lonnie in the future. she did not let Lonnie be a black cloud over her children. she made sure that her boys knew that they were loved and supported and worthy of kindness. she fought Lonnie for them.

Billy’s mom, on the other hand, who isn’t even granted a name in the narrative, just…left. she saved herself. whatever safety and comfort she provided while living in the house left with her. no matter her intentions— whether she meant to come back for him or not, whether she had some other plan —she didn’t tell Billy. her actions, on the surface, communicated to him “you’re on your own, kid.” left alone with his abuser. left alone to survive. he had no one. absolutely no one fought for the little boy crying on the phone for his mother to come home. in flashbacks and in the canon timeline we do not ever see Billy with friends. his abuser has him exactly where he wants him: isolated, scared, vulnerable. Neil could do whatever he wanted to Billy without consequences. even if Billy tried to fight back, Neil knew he could threaten and/or beat him into submission. there was no one for Billy to go to, and the older he got the less likely it was that someone would help because to the outside world he just looked like a bad kid that Neil was stuck dealing with.

more than that, Billy did not have a model for behavior outside of Neil. his father was his example for how to interact with the people and the world around him. he had no one showing him that softness or kindness was an option. he wants someone— Max, for example —to do as he says? he’s got to get loud. he’s got to get aggressive. he’s got to the be the bully, because bullies get listened to. that’s what he learned. the one person who might have shown him another path left him in the dust. he had no warm fuzzies. no support.

Jonathan physically, verbally, and emotionally pushes back against Lonnie multiple times in season one because he is free to do so. he doesn’t live under the same roof. he knows that if Lonnie tries to come after him, Joyce will raise hell. he even gets the police chief in his corner by the end, knows that both Joyce and Hopper would defend himself and Will if push came to shove. he has Nancy, too, eventually. she’s tiny and scrappy and even if she never meets Lonnie face to face, she provides Jonathan with emotional support. Will, too, provides safety and comfort and support. even Argyle, with all his goofiness and quirks, clearly loves and supports Jonathan. Jonathan fights knowing that he’s not alone in that fight. for his early-series loner persona, he’s truly surrounded by people who love him and who would go to bat for him without blinking an eye.

when Billy tries to do the same thing, pushing back against Neil because he was tired, fed up, strapped with Max for a full week, thinking there was a set time that his obligation was fulfilled only to have Neil and Susan saunter in three hours late, he gets backed into a corner. manhandled, hit, talked down to. and he knows that no one is coming to save him. he doesn’t have friends he can go to — all of his relationships feel very superficial. Susan is shut down when she tries to speak up, tries to tell Neil to back off. everyone in that house is under Neil’s control. Billy has to choose: keep fighting and get hurt, or shut up and obey. he chooses self preservation. he’s got to keep his head down to survive, because no one is coming for him, there is no one to run to, there is no one to help him. he learned a long time ago that Neil will always get his way, that Billy will always be his punching bag. he doesn’t have the tools to fight back in any real sense, and that is exactly what both Neil and Lonnie likely want. the difference is that Jonathan had support, and Billy did not.

and, on top of all of that, Billy gets immediately parentified when Max comes on the scene. and yes, I do see a problem with the parentification of Jonathan as well. both Billy and Jonathan were far too young to have that much responsibility on their plates. but it is indicative of both the time period and their socioeconomic statuses. the parents had to work. the older siblings had to step up for the younger siblings. it perpetuates today even stepping back from that, Jonathan seemed to like taking care of Will. he loves his brother, and he wants to be there for him in any way he can. he loves his mother, who supports him, who loves him back, and he wants to help her. Billy is just shoved into a big brother role with a literal stranger. he didn’t know Max from a hole in the wall and all of a sudden he’s responsible for her every move, is punished when she does wrong, has to watch his father treat her better because she’s the golden child. all of this while some other woman is taking up the space his mother left behind and not doing anything to help Billy, whether she’s too afraid to speak up or she turns a blind eye.

while these two boys have similar early childhoods, their upbringing is simply not comparable. Billy and Jonathan had two different experiences, and pitting them against each other lauding one as a cycle-breaker and the other as a perpetuator completely ignores the nuances of their individual situations. abuse and trauma is not one size fits all. healing does not happen overnight. cycle-breaking can happen at any time, and Billy was robbed of the opportunity. Jonathan was in a state of healing, surrounded by people who loved and supported him. Billy was actively being abused every day, and never had the chance to discover who he could be without the dark cloud of Neil looming over him. you don’t have to like Billy to acknowledge that his situation is not the same as Jonathan’s, that these two boys were dealing with similar trauma in two very different circumstances.

billy hargrove after being a character with such depth and layers to him; his abusive upbringing, watching his dad abuse his mother, his mother LEAVING him in the care of his abusive father, a stepmom and stepsister pushed on him, being expected to look after his younger sister whilst simultaneously taking care of himself, trying to keep up with his cool, bad boy persona whilst still grappling with his past, getting flayed as a teenager, who is still very much scared and uncertain about the world, dying at the mercy of the mindflayer as he stood up to his abuser, apologising to his stepsister for everything he did to her, before bleeding to death.

yet, he's still dumbed down to mean guy who took king steve's title.

ok ok so the idea of a camp au has been floating around in my head forever and at this point i just need to put pen to paper! now i’ve never been to camp so keep that in mind. and god only knows if this will become an actual fleshed out fic or a WIP that will collect dust in my drive forever-

anyways, it's called Camp Spruce Trails (get it, Spruce Trails, ST?) and I'm imagining this au is still set in the mid 80s, but none of the upside down stuff happens ya know? or maybe upside down stuff happens while they're at camp? but i'm kind of leaning towards letting these guys have a normal childhood-

the camp itself is your classic 6 week sleepaway camp, there’s canoeing, arts and crafts, knot tying, competitions, campfires, etc. going to camp is a borderline religious tradition for The Party and they will do everything in their power to make sure they attend. one of their favorite parts of camp, is the staff:

Argyle Franco: 18, Kitchen, he isn’t huge with the kids but Jonathan convinced him to apply for the job, fridays are always pizza nights, he keeps to himself usually but cheers on his favorite campers during their games

Robin Buckley: 18, Blue Cabin Counselor, frazzled 24/7 but trying her best, wears the handmade jewelry from her campers like it’s made of gold, knows all the camp songs by heart, cries when camp ends, no longer allowed in the kitchen after the incident of ‘84

Nancy Wheeler: 18, Yellow Cabin Counselor, by the books and her campers know that, but they still have fun, always excels in the art competitions (much to Billy’s dismay), she's the most strict counselor however she takes great pride in her ability to get all the campers in bed by lights out

Jonathan Byers: 18, Groundskeeper(?), no one really knows his exact job title, he just sort of shows up every summer and nobody says anything, he fixes leaky pipes, kitchen appliances, pulls weeds, whatever needs done, he helps out a lot in the art cabin though

Steve Harrington: 19, Green Cabin Counselor, mostly stable but the coffee rings stained into his clipboard are telling, tries to be the "cool counselor", and if you stay on his good side you’ll be fine, however he will not hesitate to drag your ass to the office and call your parents if you step out of line

Billy Hargrove: 19, Red Cabin Counselor, parents hate him, but his campers are loyal, they demolish every single athletic competition, stole Eddie’s whistle (now annoys everyone with it), also no longer allowed in the kitchen after the incident of '84

Eddie Munson: 20, Lifeguard, but he sort of pokes his head in wherever he pleases, was deemed unfit to be a camp counselor so they stuck him as lifeguard, plays guitar around the campfire at night, multiple writes up for smoking on the job

if i were to flesh this out more into a full au fic (or more realistically, a series of ficlets??) you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be a giant love hexagon thing that will be going on as a subplot to the camp activities. i'm not even a huge multi-shipper or anything but picture it: Nancy asks Robin to watch her campers for a minute so she can go flirt with Jonathan? yeah sure why not. Nancy gets back and finds Robin sulking cause she's jealous? i'm sure Nancy would be happy to cheer Robin up with a kiss! Eddie and Argyle bump into each other smoking behind the shed? oh whoops my finger slipped and now they're shot gunning a joint. Steve find's Billy and Eddie chilling at Skull Rock? well shit now all three of 'em are making out a la Challengers.
