I reread some of magnus chase and I noticed this detail: Sam being really good with horses?? and being really embarrassed about it??
IS IT BECAUSE LOKI FUCKED A HORSE???ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
also jack saying that otis "played tug of war with loki" and otis also being really embarrassed about it
WAS THAT A REFERENCE TO LOKI TYING HIS JUNK TO A GOAT TO ENTERTAIN SKADI IN NORSE MYTHSðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ AKGYFKHJGAWKRJF WAS THE GOAT OTIS THE WHOLE TIME?>??
Ragnarok Out of Context like...
Hey! I am at the last part of book 3 magnus chase. But I must say in the terms of Gods, it is my least favourite series. Loki is shown an evil dude who kills his children, when in reality, one of the reasons of Ragnarok was the illtreatment his childeen got. Sigyn is shown as a victim side character,Thor was meant to be funny, as the farting, show surfing dude, but it was more annoying. What do you think? (I would have written more but limited words+ I might be biased towards MCU's potrayal)
Yeah, I mostly feel the same way about MCGA's portrayal of the gods. I love the series and its characters at large, but I think some of the gods were just portrayed wrong. My main complaints are about Loki and Sigyn, of course; because even if I still love MCGA Loki I just wish he was given more depth besides "Ooh I'm so evil, I torture people and make my own childrens' lives hell and I just wanna destroy the universe". Like,, where are the motives?? Narvi and Vali were mentioned once when -the way I see it- their death is basically what led to Loki wanting Ragnarok. And then there's the fact that he verbally abuses Sigyn when we see them in the cave and completely ignores her otherwise; and the fact that Sigyn herself is portrayed as,, a doormat and that's all.
Thor was also inaccurate but I feel like not that much?? Like the book portrays the gods in a modern setting, and going by the myths, if they were written today I feel like Thor would mostly be like that. But it's true that there's a certain factor of seriousness to his character the series ignored completely.
I feel like this happens with other gods too, like Freyja. She's portrayed as just,, pretty. And that's the one thing people always get wrong about Freyja, she's a warrior too.
But eh, it's also true that you can't really expect much accuracy from this kind of series. After all, they're centered around the protagonists. The gods are plot devices. The author kinda needed to make Loki into the cruel, heartless villain, Sigyn into the tragic victim wife, Thor into the dumb, laughing stock lazy dude, etc.
My major headcanon for Loki and Sigyn is that before marriage they agreed to have open relantionship. Of course, Loki is the one who benefits the most. Sigyn could have more partners too, but chooses to be loyal to her husband. She doesn't get mad at all of his romances and he would not be angry if she had someone too. Sigyn is also pan, meaning she could be with anyone (as long as they are Loki in disguise).
Same, except I think Sigyn does have more partners as well. Maybe less than Loki, but still. (This is also influenced by my headcanon that Sigyn could have demigod children as well in MCGA)
hi stef♡
I know you've read many norse-mythology-related books but have you ever read the Magnus Chase series? If you have, what do you think of them? And if you haven't, what other norse-mythology-related books do you reccomend? Other than Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology.
In English that is..
Thank you so much and have a great day deaaarr♡
Heyho there, love!
I have heard of the Magnus Chase series, I think it's written for children, no? Not that it matters, I might give it a try one day!
And yes, I definitely have some recommendations for you!
Non-fiction:
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (I know you mentioned it but I had to put it on the list 😅)
The Prose Edda, Penguin Classics Edition
The Poetic Edda, translated by Jackson Crawford (I also recommend his Youtube channel!)
The Norse Myths by Carolyne Larrington
The Penguin Book of Norse Myths
Fiction:
Loki, A Bad God's Guide To Being Good by Louie Stowell (a comic novel like Diary of a Whimpy Kid, hilarious)
To love a god by Evie Kent
The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris
The Testament of Loki by Joanne M. Harris
Runemarks by Joanne M. Harris
Runelight by Joanne M. Harris
The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec (I recently finished that one, it’s SO good!)
The Goddess of Nothing at All (on my TBR list, can't wait to read this one)
Truth and other Lies by Lyra Wolf (one of the best Loki books out there, really recommend the audio book!)
I have a few more buuuut those are in German. 😅
I'd recommend that you read as many different versions of the Poetic and Prose Edda as possible though because the translations do vary a little.
This is what I can think of from the top of my head, you should definitely also check out my Goodreads profile, I have a Norse Mythology and a Loki shelf and I'm constantly growing my library (even though I’m slow with updating and not all books are on there yet)! 🤗 Happy Reading!
Can memes be offerings? Pretty sure I felt Loki cackling.
Laurits, this outfit is unhinged. Plaid. Stripes. Cowboy boots. I'm...
Almost finished Ship of the dead the flyting has begun
Also i hate how its being implied that Sigyn wants to leave loki and will betray him.
(Loki you can win this if you pull out the yo mama jokes lmao)
You ever just wanna…
