Hiiii, thank you for asking! Sorry it's taken a while for me to answer this, I started classes again this week and its been a little hectic.

I have some WIPs, aside from the fanfic ideas that have been consuming my brain recently I also have 2 original fantasy stories planned out and 1 science fiction that really only exists as a concept but I like it so it counts for now.

(Also even though I don't have the time right now, I loved your idea of swapping scenes to rewrite, that sounds like so much fun!)

I'm gonna limit this to things I've worked on in the last six months. Not all of them actually have titles so have brief descriptions instead.

I thought this was a comment on writing stories yourself versus giving a Gen AI a prompt. But yeah no I'd love a 100k (in money) so I can then work on reaching 100k (in word count).

so you want to be a writer aka someone who drinks lukewarm coffee at midnight while arguing with imaginary people, googles things like “how much blood loss is fatal” while eating snacks, gets emotionally attached to characters they’ll probably kill off, stares at a blank page for hours just to write one sentence and delete it immediately, has 27 unfinished projects but starts a new one anyway because it’s different this time, and spends more time daydreaming about interviews they’ll never give than actually writing—congratulations, you’re already halfway there.

I decided to start writing again, and in the spirit of AuDHD threw out everything i wrote before and started a new project. Now, how do I write a character that isn't in some way shape or form me.

Got hit with the writing brain worms, started a brand-new writing project about a post scarcity human explorer group returning to find earth in a military dictatorship and going "dude wtf stop that, shits cringe". behold a snippet of what's to come. Bonus points if you can figure out what other sci-fi civilizations I shamelessly ripped off to mangle together into the Terran Empire and the Andromedan People's Compact.

Leo thought you were beautiful. With your soft skin and lush hair. Leo found it unfortunate that it wasn't real but he loved you regardless. He's never been good with people, never understanding what made them tick. But with you, since you were an automaton, it just came naturally. It's like he had a 6th sense for everything you needed. Like his magic Hepheastus powers allowed him to read your mechanical mind. He knew when you wanted flowers, when you wanted hugs, when you were bored or upset and he always tried his best to adhere to your needs.

You sat cross-legged on the floor, holding your hair out of the way while he worked on fixing a loose cog under the hatch in the back of your neck. "Jeez, Daedalus really put work into this, huh?" He muttered, impressed by the wiring and pumping of your robotic insides. Back in the labyrinth, Daedalus not only had a son, but a daughter. You weren't mentioned in mythology because you weren't as relevant as your brother Icarus. You'd never truly felt seen, being kept alive for centuries just so your father had someone to speak to to prevent insanity in the confined walls of the maze while everyone above spoke of the tragedy that was your brother's death. Maybe if you had been reckless you'd have the same recognition he does. But you were glad you'd been smarter than him because if you hadn't you would've never met Leo. Leo made you feel seen, wanted, tended to. Leo loved you, and he made that abundantly clear.

"Babe, pass me a screwdriver real quick?" He requested, gesturing to the screwdriver in the toolbox by your knee. "The small one, please." When you handed him the screwdriver he thanked you, pressing a kiss to your temple as a show of gratitude before he returned his focus to the back of your neck. You looked to the side with your eyes, watching in the mirror as he sat in a position that made him look like a shrimp with his tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth and his thick eyebrows knitted together in unwavering concentration, careful not to mess up or ruin anything. He'd never forgive himself if he messed you up somehow. He shut the hatch and grabbed your shoulder to spin you around and face him, like a hairdresser after giving you a funky new hairdo. You smiled at him and took his hand. "Thank you, Leo."

Leo fought back a shudder as your freezing cold hand intertwined with his. "No problem, babe. I love you." His hand heated up to warm yours before he let his hand cool down, the heat sticking to your fake skin and giving the illusion of a real hand holding his. A feeling he yearns for. He knows you can't give him that feeling, you know it too. And he knows you can't help it, but he craves it. No matter how realistic your skin feels or how defined your carved in fingerprints are, you aren't a real human. Not physically atleast. But even so, he loves you and there is not a thing in the world he'd give you up for, not even warm skin.

And I'm just like, please don't do that?? As a reader, i do not agree?

For example, i saw one guy saying, "Don't use one-off side characters. Combine them into one character, so that the batista the MC sees everyday, the secondary love interest, and the childhood are all 1 3-dimensional person instead of 3 1-dimenaional characters."

I saw that and i just immediately thought, please god no, don't do that. I love random side characters! I hate it when it feels like the MC's world is so tiny, like they literally only interact with 2 or 3 people. I wanna see how they are with strangers! How strangers percieve them! It makes the world feel larger!

And i admit, i am NOT a writer, at all. But I read CONSTANTLY. I'm part of the audience, and i prefer when my book/fanfiction does the opposite of what professionals tell them to.

so don’t get me wrong because a lot of arthurian stuff is super misogynistic. but it’s never really in the damsel in distress way you expect. like the most helpless damsel is lancelot trapped and crying in a tower, completely useless, until this random girl who made him behead a guy in front of her fifty pages ago rolls up with a pickax and rope and is like “ok I’m minecrafting you out of here.” and this works.

I’m so baffled by authors who accidentally write the most compelling queer ships of all time, and then become angry when fans acknowledge that the characters are in fact queer.

I’m not writing faerie porn to reinvent the tree of good and evil. If you want to be spoon fed moral purity go read the book about drowning children, God’s Favorite’s enacting horrible crimes out of infantile yearning for power, SA, and thought crime.

now say it with me: authors/artists dont owe you moral purity. an author/artist job is not to hold you by the hand & tell you exactly what is Good™ & what is Bad™. you should be able to think for yourself

I feel like we really lost something when we started looking at writing as a reader-centric product meant to appeal to the desires of a specific audience rather than a writer-centric approach of someone writes whatever particular thing particular compels them/whatever weird thing the demons in their head want to talk about, and people out there who are also compelled, and/or relate, find that writing. A lot of discussions of writing really center around what readers want rather than a writer's exploration. Sometimes as a reader I don't know what I want. I click on a fic or pick up a book I'm not sure about but that looks interesting, and I love it. Reading what I expect to get is it's own joy, but we always need to expand our horizons and not get mad at creators for not always writing what we want/expect.

Sometimes I think about putting my essays on substack or something but the idea of getting no views while actively feeding the ai scrapbot makes me want to

Some of my poems got accepted for the first issue of a lit magazine. I haven’t told anyone but my sister. I’m scared they’ll change their minds by the time the issue comes out, and I’ll have looked silly for thinking my work was worthy of publishing.
