WANNA TALK ABOUT SELFIES?

Hi Everybody,

IT’S TIME!!! My name is Elise and I’m a grad student at UW-Madison. I’m looking for interview participants for my MA thesis all about selfies! I’m hoping to collect personal narratives and self-descriptions about your experiences with and thoughts on selfies (taking them, sharing them, posting them, seeing them) and to explore connections between selfies and community, identity, sexuality, and self-care.

Criteria: I’m especially hoping to interview people between the ages of 18 and 30 who either identify as women or whose identities don’t fit the gender binary. I will not ask any specific questions about your sexual practices or solicit any sexually explicit images. I will be collecting interview participants’ selfies (as they choose to share them!) but I’m not interested in explicit images, images of anyone other than you, images that involve illegal activities, or images you don’t want to share publicly.

If you do choose to participate I’ll walk you through an informed consent process before the interview and answer any questions you might have. You’re free to stop and withdraw from the study at any time. Nothing about the interview will be confidential. I will be asking you to share selfies and talk about yourself in relation to selfies. You should know that you will be identifiable in anything that I publish and/or present.

This is so close to my heart and I feel like I’ve been thinking about it and planning it forever and I’m super excited that this process is finally happening!

I saw a red carpet interview with Megan Fox once, where the interviewer asked her how she “slimmed down” for some role and Megan Fox looked straight at her and just deadpanned, “I didn’t eat,” and then she waited just long enough for the interviewer to get so uncomfortable trying to come up with a perky, tv-appropriate response to that, and then she said in such a great dry bored fake voice, “Just kidding! Pilates.” Which is amazing because I can’t help but hope/wish/think that “pilates” is also a mocking answer, because claiming that pilates is the reason you have a perfect hawt bod is just such an obviously stupidly untrue Hollywood thing to say. And the interviewer was still kind of unnerved and she just said, “OH UM THANK YOU FOR YOUR HONESTY?!” and then they cut away and anyway, that’s why I love Megan Fox.
