Lilo And Stitch - Blog Posts

"Pair of aliens that are definitely a gay couple even though we're not going to explicitly say so, one half of which is voiced by Kevin McDonald" really was a cartoon character dynamic niche in the early 2000s huh.

I did the the “Six Fanarts” challenge again, this time using recommendations given to me by my friend, @lilystar244 ! I had a lot of fun drawing this one, and technically it's a crossover because they're all wearing Mabel-made sweaters.

Here's a list of the characters in order from left to right:

First Row: Naomi Turner - Elena of Avalor Mabel Pines and Waddles - Gravity Falls Alya Cesaire and Trixx - Miraculous Ladybug Second Row: Peridot - Steven Universe Little My - Moomin Stitch - Lilo & Stitch

[Image ID: A pencil crayon and ink drawing of all the above-mentioned characters. In the first row, they are all taking a selfie together. In the second row, Peridot is distracting Little My so Stitch can set up a prank with a fire extinguisher. End ID]

Just finished watching Lilo & Stitch again after almost a full decade of not doing so out of rage for the new remake and I'm. The whole time I was thinking that's the kind of movie you make fanfics involving your OCs or favorite characters watching, especially if they're like Lilo and Stitch specifically. Or like Nani specifically.

Like. The whole time I was appreciating it in a new light because for a while I felt like Lilo myself. And Stitch. Lashing out, or trying not to. Always angry and hurt and not know where to put it.

And now I've got favorite characters and OCs that can relate, or I can relate to them, and now I just.

Now I just wanna write a lil fic where one of my OCs (who I may or may not talk about more often, depending on just myself) and Grimmjow or Grimmjow and Ichigo or Grimmjow and Ichigo and one of my other OCs (another one I might mention/rp with more often at some point) sit down after a rough patch and just. Watch Lilo & Stitch.

Because I feel like it'd help (especially Grimmjow). In what ways, I dunno. In my fics? Understanding how softness and family work, after so long of having none of it. How to feel accepted, even while being inhuman. In the actual Bleach universe? Idfk, probably that even a literal experiment can have something of his own, and a tired brother can actually lean on people.

All I know is I've got too many ideas, writer's AND artist's block out the ASS, and I may or may not cry over a fuzzy lil blue fucker who can't swim to save his life, and a tormented lil girl and her exhausted sister making up some strange family with a few other strange aliens, a sweet and hot performer, and a goddamn (former) CIA agent.

After seeing all the responses to it, I decided to ☠️ the live action Lilo & Stitch to see the damage for myself. Setting aside the common criticisms (no gantu, jumbas... everything, Nani and Lilo's relationship or lack thereof, cobra bubbles/the social worker, The Ending), something that honestly killed the movie in its infancy for me is its pace and its noise.

This movie is allergic to beats of silence or introspective moments, which is bonkers, because that's one of the things that makes the original so strong. Lilo walking home alone after hula practice. Nani sneaking to hear Lilo's prayer. The quiet after the incident at the beach before Lilo says, "You ruined everything." Stitch alone in the woods before he cries out that he's lost. All of these moments so many more are cradled by silence as the movie urges us to look and listen with patience. In the live action, these moments are rushed (at least the ones that are still in it, as not all of them are) and they suffer for it. Hell, even Stitch's escape sequence is undermined by how rapid the pacing is.

So many times, I found myself just wishing for the movie to *breathe*. There are so few moments of quiet introspection, and the ones that are there are still littered with extra things that just clutter the simple, powerful story underneath it. Tack on that almost every single intimate character moment or interaction is punctuated with a joke of some kind. It's like the movie is insecure about its own sincerity, so it buries it under cheap jokes and quips.

What really gets me is that the original is funny in part because of its ability to be quiet. Lilo showing Nani Stitch's record player trick is funny as fuck in the original because of how its quiet. Lilo's deadpan face, Nani's stunned silence, and the pauses when Lilo closes his mouth all service the comedy of the scene. The scene also acts as another reinforcement of Nani's understanding of Lilo in that she simply watches to see what the fuck her weirdo little sister has figured out.

In the live action, they have Lilo talking throughout the whole bit, and Nani just offhandedly responds while only looking at her phone (the movie is so confused as to how Nani feels about Lilo in my opinion) and it just falls flat, even with the read that the scene is meant more to illustrate their strained sister relationship.

It honestly stinks cause the little girl playing Lilo is adorable and doing a great job, especially for her age and for the crappy movie she's in. Her dynamic with Stitch, while altered (she's more of a little troublemaker type in this, sneaking into resorts, freeing someone's chickens, sneaking candy to feed the shelter dogs, etc.), is still well done and very wholesome. I just wish they'd gotten a better movie to be in.

Tldr; the movie lacks dynamic pacing and the quiet moments that made the original movie's simple, grounded (lol sort of) story so impactful.

Happy 100th Birthday Disney!

Happy 100th Birthday Disney!

Didn’t really know what to do, tried a realistic Mickey Mouse but didn’t end up as creepy as I hoped for.

Maybe something for Snowwhite but knew it would just be a lesser good version of a poster Alex Ross did once.

So, here’s a shot inspired by my favorite Disney-movie, Lilo and Stitch!

I love these movies so much and thank you Disney, despite your many flaws, for creating my and many others’ childhoods!

Unpopular Disney opinion: Disney has every right making remakes/reboots or sequels of beloved films.

For one, making movies that people will go see is literally their job as movie studios. And how do they make money? By making films they know people will go see. Remakes and sequels are safe options that get people in the theaters to go spend an hour and a half or longer feeling nostalgia as they enjoy the characters and stories they already know.

The movie industry has been suffering due to the introduction of streaming as less people are going to the theater and waiting till it goes to streaming, so these "cash grabs" from nostalgia ands continued stories allow disney to keep going for years to come. Even last night at D23, there was a mix of original content and sequels and remakes announced. And yeah, sometimes it's frustrating to see a franchise continuing on for years after you keep thinking they're done like Toy Story. But enjoy the nostalgia while they make a film targeted at a new generation. I for one am excited for a film that's targeted at the ipad kids, even if I don't know what the plot will be.

And for the worries they'll be woke? Disney has always been a little controversial. We just don't see it as much anymore in the old stuff because that stuff isn't controversial anymore. And oh hey, even if it is, it does NOTHING to take away from the original media you love. So there's no reason to worry that they'll "ruin" your beloved childhood film with a remake. They're separate pieces of media. They don't even have to be a shot for shot remake. In the case of Snow White, it's coming out almost 90 years after the original. It's going to be a different story as the people consuming it are different people. Society has changed since 1937.

Finally, cash grab or not, people need to stop being so pessimistic about these films. Stop hating on every square inch of a film before you even have a teaser. Films are meant to be enjoyed. Enjoy the nostalgia and storytelling and the magic. Remember what it was like to be a kid and try to experience that magic all over again. Whether you like remakes or not, that doesn't change the fact that artists put tons of work into these films and pull off some INCREDIBLE feats with these films. It's magical. And maybe after the movie comes out and you watch it, you don't like it. That's okay. But don't go in with the mindset that you'll absolutely hate it from the moment you find out they announced the movie.

Movies are supposed to be fun. It's okay to enjoy a new version of an old story. Let yourself embrace the magic. It's not worth the negativity. We've got enough of that in this world right now as it is.
