You loved a loud life just the same as he did. You enjoyed the traveling, the partying, the sleepless nights, hell, even the stressful nights you wouldnβt trade for a peaceful, quiet, boring, normal life. You were eternally grateful for having a job surrounding the same tracks Lando is driving on, even if that was rather a lucky coincidence instead of a thought-through plan.
You loved it not only because it meant youβd get to be close to your boyfriend most of the time, more so because you got to experience the loudness with him. The parties, the race weekends, just everything. Youβd have it without him too, and no doubt, you would have tons of fun doing so, but of course itβs better with a βsuper cool hot famous boyfriendβ by your side, as he liked to call himself.
You loved it, until you couldnβt anymore.
Not as dramatic as it sounds. You were invited to a wedding of an old friend back at home, and Lando, for obvious reasons, couldnβt attend with you, so you flew out the country by yourself, giving Lando one last good luck kiss a few days before the Las Vegas Grand Prix. You missed him dearly, but you also missed your friends at home whom you havenβt seen in what felt like forever, and really, whatβs a better reason for a reunion than a wedding?
But thatβs where the trouble began.
You liked to call yourself independent. Very independent, even. You didnβt have a problem with being far from Lando for a few weeks, and while you of course loved him more than anyone else in this world, youβve stated before that in case of you losing the job for whatever reason or if you just couldnβt travel with him anymore, youβd think a long distance relationship would work just well. At least for you.
Of course, the constant missing your partner would complicate things, but thatβs still no reason to break up a relationship that has lasted for longer than three years already. At least thatβs what you thought.
Lando liked to call himself independent too. Very independent, even. Too bad itβs all a lie.
Lando has always hated the idea of being away from you, or rather the idea of you being far from him. Itβs not like he didnβt have any trust in you, itβs just become normal for him to always have you at least somewhat in his reach. Thatβs how your relationship has always been, you were coworkers before you were lovers.
He didnβt mind you taking a few days off. He also didnβt mind you wanting to spend some time with your family and friends who were still located far, far away from wherever you two would usually have to travel to for the many races. However, he did mind you not being near him.
It bothered him more than heβd like to admit.
Youβve talked about it before, talked about him being too needy and too possessive from time to time, but never once have you two fought about it. You thought you never would, and you were right. Your departure was slightly painful for the both of you, but it was only 2 weeks that youβd be gone, and itβs not at all like you couldnβt stay in contact. So there was nothing to worry about, right?
Or so you thought.
The moment you arrived at you local airport you saw your mom run up to you, caging you in her arms as if to never let you go again. Your father wasnβt far behind, and then came your brother. It was a sweet little moment of a family reuniting as a whole again. And even though you wanted to set your whole focus on the few next days to come, the lovely wedding and the friends you once lost on the way who youβd now finally see again, Lando never really left your mind. You just didnβt understand why, you werenβt usually like this.
Maybe it was just that after five years of knowing each other and three of those spent dating, you did grow somewhat dependent. you knew it wasnβt the truth, but blaming it on a simple thing like that seemed terribly easier than giving in to the thoughts of what could actually be the cause of it. You didnβt have any time for that. You werenβt here to think about work or about Lando, but about the things that were right in front of your eyes, which at this moment was the beautiful white wedding decorated with all sorts of flowers of sunset hues.
The wedding was held on a beach, surrounded by the dreamy sound of waves crashing and seagulls singing their own nupital melodies. You arrived with one of your old friends Nina, both of you wearing long and flowy pastel dresses, just as the dress code ordered you to. The day went on with you two crying at seeing one of your childhood friends getting married, listening to the heartfelt vows of bride and groom.
Your mind immediately went to Lando and you standing at the altar like they did. You knew it was too soon, and you knew he didnβt have time for marriage, even less for planning a wedding, but you still couldnβt help it. You really did miss him more this time, and throughout the whole ceremony, the feeling of something being incredibly off only intensed.
But the night came, and the feeling faded. Or at least the drinks made it do that.
You were sitting with Nina and two guys you used to be very close with at the dim bar near the dance floor when you suddenly noticed something light up inside your purse. You didnβt mind it at first, not wanting to be rude towards Tom who was trying to talk to you without stumbling over his word completely, but the shots you downed beforehand made it undoubtedly harder.
Your phone lit up again. Slowly getting on your nerves, you decided to wait until Tomβs attention was fixated on Nina again to then check your messages and - missed calls?

Lando hated how his mood changed whenever you were gone. It felt as if there was something missing when you werenβt there waiting for him at home after debriefing or after PR events and whatnot. He missed your hugs and kisses, your smile and most importantly, just your touch.
Truth be told - but never to you - when you first started dating, for Lando, the thriving point was attraction. One month in, thatβs when he realized that he wasnβt getting rid of you any time soon. Not that he minded. Two months in and the two of you made it official, of course not without any drama because how was a McLaren driver allowed to date a McLaren employee? Two weeks and the conversations and the hate online slowly died down, but your relationship kept on blooming. There was just one thing that somehow had Lando incredibly confused - why did your relationship suddenly feel more like you couldnβt get rid of him? Why did it feel like he was the one attached to you instead of the other way around?
Not that it felt bad or anything, he was just very used to have the girl being that dependent on him, to always want his attention, to always ask for his opinion on everything. Now he was the one all over you, and you didnβt mind it at all. You had the man you love wrapped tightly around your finger, just like he had you. For three years now.
But that didnβt help him right now, not with jealousy nagging at his side like a demon. You were out, enjoying your time with people you loved, and while he should be happy for you, he spent his time rather annoyed at you not being where he was. Itβs only been a week, and work has already failed to keep his mind off of you. And he hated it. He knew it was the day of the wedding, and he was done wasting his time only thinking about you, so what else was there for a man to do instead of going clubbing with the guys? He hadnβt spent time with them in a long time, neither had he gone clubbing these past fem months, too caught up with Formula 1. So this would be okay, right? Just some drinks to keep his mind off of you.
Right?

that was weird, you thought, and your stomach dropped and you felt the dread creeping up your consciousness. It had you feeling weaker than ever.
You quietly excused yourself to go to the bathroom, though every step towards it made it harder and harder to breathe.
What if something had happened to him? A work incident? Then how did Carlos know? Were they hanging out and he hurt himself? Were they out and someone there hurt Lando?
Did something happen to your Lando?
Your finger hovered shaking over the green button until you finally decided to press it and call the Ferrari driver back. Not even a single beep was heard before he huffed out your name as if he had been yearning for you to finally phone him back.
βCarlos? Is everything okay?β The Spaniard could practically feel your distress through the screen and he swore heβs never felt an urge so strong to punch someone right across their face, let alone his best friend Lando Norris.
It took some time for realization to set in. Your breathing had slowed down but the chills all over your body told that it was a sign far from good. Very far from good.
You could still make out the faint sound of Carlosβ voice as you locked the door of the bathroom stall furthest in the back, however, every word that came after βLando cheated on youβ somehow wasnβt comprehensive to you.
You just hope heβll still like her in the morning, cause you, for sure, werenβt coming back.

Carlos Sainz was a womanizer, flirt, and playboy, and no one could change him.
You rolled your eyes for the third time that night as you watched him flirt with the first woman who crossed his path at Ferrariβs end of the year party. Maybe it was a good thing this season was over and you wouldnβt have to see him anymore; after all, he was leaving, and you were staying. It wasnβt that you were envious with Carlos; it was just that his behavior stressed you out. Maybe he remind you a little of your ex-boyfriend? Whatever the case was, Carlos was far from your favorite person in the company, even though you seemed to be his.
βWhy the face, preciosa?β another thing you didnβt like about Carlosβthe damn Spanish nicknames.
βWhat face?β you asked, half wanting to punch him, half curious.
You quickly realized that if you felt even a hint of curiosity about what Carlos had to say, youβd probably had too much vodka.
βYouβre looking at me like you want to stab my eyes out.β he laughed at his own joke, and you noticed heβd probably had as much to drink as youβif not more.
Your cheeks flushed with a mix of alcohol and embarrassment, but you werenβt about to show it in front of him. Thank Enzo for the dim lighting.
βYou never change, do you, Sainz?β you muttered, taking another sip of your vodka martini. βAlways so self-centered.β
The Spaniard smiled at you, one of those smiles he saved specifically for the hundreds of women he flirted with dailyβone he used way too often with you. Before he could reply with whatever cheesy line he had prepared, Charles appeared beside you both, throwing an arm over Carlosβs shoulders and the other over yours.
βHowβs it going?β Charles asked with a mischievous grin.
βY/Nβs drunk and I think she wants to kill me,β Carlos replied, maintaining eye contact with you.
βThatβs not true!β you retorted like a child, making Charles laugh.
βMaybe youβve had enough of these, huh?β Charles teased, taking the glass from your hand. βMate, why donβt you escort her to her room, just to make sure she gets there safely?β he suggested, addressing Carlos.
βI donβt need anyone to escort me anywhere, and I donβt want to leave.β
βNo problem.β Carlos ignored your protest, downed the rest of his drink, and gently guided you away from Charles and toward the exit of the party.
You didnβt say anything on the way, a little frustrated that both men had effectively kicked you out of the event but also a little tired, as the alcohol was beginning to take its toll. The party was being held at a luxurious hotel in Maranello, where the guests were also staying, and by the time you and Carlos reached the elevator, youβd mustered just enough energy to speak.
βOkay, weβre here. I guess you can go now,β you said, making no effort to thank him for accompanying you.
βIβll walk you to your door and leave after that.β
βYou donβt have to do that,β you replied.
βY/N, contrary to what you might think of me, I am a gentleman.β
The elevator arrived, and Carlos gestured for you to step in first. Too tired to argue, you entered the small metal box and pressed the button for your floor. You allowed yourself to close your eyes for a moment, lulled by the gentle motion of the elevator. You might not have liked Carlos, but oddly enough, you trusted him.
However, your brief moment of peace shattered as the elevator jolted violently, and the bright white light flickered off, leaving you in dim emergency lighting.
βWhat the fuck?β you whispered.
Carlos acted quickly, pressing the emergency button. When nothing happened for a few seconds, he pressed it again, and this time a male voice mumbled something in Italian through the speakers. Panic crept into your chest as you turned to Carlos, hoping he understood better than you.
βThe hotel is having issues with this elevator, but they already called maintenance. Itβll take about twenty to thirty minutes,β Carlos translated.
βOkay,β you replied, your voice weaker than you intended.
Carlos noticed the change in your demeanor despite his drunken state.
βYou okay?β he asked, draping his suit jacket over your bare shoulders without asking.
βYeah, itβs justβ¦ I didnβt expect to be stuck in an elevator right now, you know?β for once, you didnβt argue with his chivalry, instead pulling the jacket tighter around yourself, comforted by the scent of him.
Carlos nodded, moving closer when he realized you werenβt retreating as usual. You sat on the cold ceramic floor, and he joined you. Despite the proximity, the faint light made it difficult to see your face clearly. Maybe it was the dim lighting or the liquid courage, but he spoke up.
βWhy do you hate me, Y/N?β His accent thickened as he asked the question, catching you off guard.
βI donβt hate you, Carlos,β you replied simply. When he realized you werenβt offering more, he pressed on.
βDoesnβt seem like it.β His tone lacked its usual playful edge; it sounded raw, vulnerable.
You turned to face him, even though you couldnβt fully see his expression.
βIβm serious,β you insisted. βI just think our personalities clash. But I donβt hate you.β
He nodded slowly. βYou know Iβm not really like that, right?β
You frowned, confused. βLike what?β
βI know what you think of me, but Iβm not like that. Iβm not a womanizer.β
You didnβt believe him, but you were kind enough not to say it aloud.
βIβve never said that about you,β you offered, a little white lie.
βMaybe not, but I know you think it.β Carlos sighed, running a hand over his face. βYouβre so frustrating, you know that?β
Before you could take offense, he continued. βIβve been trying to get your attention for four years, and you never noticed.β
You were speechless. Completely and utterly stunned.
βUh?β was all you could manage, feeling ridiculous. βBut all the womenβ¦β
βOnly one matters,β he interrupted, subtly gesturing toward you.
"Why didnβt you just say something?" you managed to ask after what felt like an eternity. You still needed to process his confession.
βYou had a boyfriend when we met, so I didnβt. Then, when you broke up, youβd already decided I was just a player, which Iβm not.β
Unintentionally, you poutedβa gesture he couldnβt see due to the darkness. You tried to take yourself back to those moments in the past when maybe Carlos had attempted to get your attention in some way, and how youβd always viewed his actions with ulterior motives. In your defense, as he had mentioned, you had a boyfriend when you first met him, and he was incredibly decent not to make a move during that time. But later, when your heart was broken, perhaps you hated all men, so it wouldnβt surprise you to think you had misjudged him all these years.
βIβm sorry,β you whispered sincerely, looking into his big brown eyes.
Suddenly, the space started to feel much hotter than before, although not for long. As quickly as it had malfunctioned, the flickering white light turned on, and the elevator began ascending again just as it had moments earlier. Seconds later, a soft ding and the glowing red numbers announced your arrival at your hotel floor, and the metallic doors slid open, welcoming three men dressed in blue uniformsβundoubtedly the hotel maintenance team.
The man closest to them apologized on behalf of the hotel in Italian, and Carlos responded that it was no problem, helping you off the cold floor and exiting as quickly as possible, his hand still holding yours.
When you arrived at your room, he let go of your hand, and you immediately missed its warmth.
βAre you going back to the party?β you asked, trying to sound nonchalant while searching for your key in your purse.
βI donβt think so. I think Iβll head to my room to rest,β he replied, searching your gaze.
You nodded slowly as you opened the door, mentally debating whether or not to ask the question. In the end, the part of your brain fueled by alcohol, adrenaline, and the euphoria of his earlier confession won.
βOr maybeβ¦ you could come in, if you want?β Your eyes finally locked with his in a hopeful gaze.
His answer wasnβt immediate, but then he nodded.

In all honesty, you shouldnβt have used Carlos the way you did. But in your defense, you were a bit broken when you met him, and it clearly wasnβt his fault. Maybe Carlos was just in the right place at the right time, while you were in the wrong place.
You also knew it wasnβt fair to give only half of yourself while he gave his all in a relationship that was born out of your desire to forget your ex. You had told him you were over him when, deep down, you knew it wasnβt true. But Carlos was a gentleman, he was beautifulβthe kind of man youβd always wanted. Only, you werenβt ready. And you werenβt a good girlfriend at all.
The lies, the late-night escapades, the jealousy, and the fights were the catalyst for the end of a relationship that had been doomed from the start.
You felt awful when you had to say goodbye to Carlos, while his heart shattered into a thousand pieces.
Little by little, after the breakup, you began to realize how much Carlos meant to you. How much you missed hearing his voice when you came home after a long day, or how you loved running your fingers through his soft hair while watching TV, or the simple fact of being able to talk to him every day, knowing heβd always be there to listen to you, and you to him.
You hadnβt realized that in the process of trying to forget your ex with Carlos, you had fallen in love with himβand lost him, too.
He missed you, that was clear. But forgiving you after how you treated him was hard. And could you really blame him? You werenβt the person you shouldβve been, the girlfriend he deserved.
You needed to see him again, to apologize, to ask him to come back. It started with convincing your friends to go clubbing on the weekendsβthen the next weekend, and the one after thatβall in the hope that, by chance, Carlos might walk into the same club. Your friends noticed your intentions but chose not to intervene, simply accompanying you to the nights out. When they grew tired of going out every weekend, you reached out to other friends to keep the cycle going.
One weekend in particular, while doing your makeup, you stumbled upon a photo of Carlos in Los Cabos with his friends and a group of girls youβd never seen before. The emptiness in your chest stole your breath for one, two, three seconds before you snapped back to reality. He was enjoying his life in Los Cabos while you were still here, putting on makeup for yet another night outβa routine that had become too familiar.
You ignored the sinking feeling and finished your makeup. This time, you werenβt going to the club hoping to see Carlos for the first time in weeks; this time, you were going in the hopes of forgetting him.
But your brain and heart had other plans. You felt lonely and missed him, and you accidentally called the guy you were dancing with "Carlos" as he offered you one tequila shot after another. You drank just to avoid feeling sad about missing him, though tears still slipped down your cheeks as you remembered the photo youβd seen hours earlier. The guy wiped them away gently as he continued dancing close to you.
The club was too hot, with no room to breathe, and you felt aloneβyou just had to get out of there. When you finally managed to separate yourself from the guy, you stepped outside for fresh air. And though you didnβt realize it at the moment, all those tequila shots had taken their toll, and you decided that calling your ex-boyfriend was a good idea.
After five rings, the call went to voicemailβuntil the familiar deep voice answered.
βHello?β
βCarlos,β you slurred, a drunken smile on your face.
βY/n? Whatβs going on?β
You took a few seconds to respond. What was going on? You missed him, thought about him all the time, wanted him back.
βI was thinking about you,β you simply said.
βAre you drunk?β he asked, his tone a bit more alert now.
βWhy did you disappear all of a sudden?β You ignored his question. βWhat happened to us?β When Carlos didnβt answer, you spoke again. βI miss you. And Iβm sorry.β
βWhy are you telling me this now?β God, how you missed his voice. βYou look happy in your photos. Why are you telling me this when youβre drunk? Why are you telling me this when Iβm moving on?β
The tears didnβt take long to fall down your cheeks. Each word he said was like a little dagger to your heart, and you wanted to apologize in every language, to scream it at the top of your lungs, but all you could do was cry silently as he grew angrier with you.
βIβm sorry. Iβm sorry, Iβm sorry, Iβm sorry,β you repeated, crying. βI love you, and I miss you, and Iβm sorry.β
The silence on the other end made you check if Carlos had hung up, but he was still there.
βI hope you feel what I felt throughout our entire relationship, Y/n. And I hope you never make anyone else go through what I went through with you.β
