Thinking about how Yhwach seeing his father again after thousands of years solidified the sheer hypocrisy of his existence and morals and further solidified his self-hatred.
He says he loves peace, but does he really? Or was that his father. The shinigami are weak with peace. Soul Society is pathetic with it. But that’s good for him, for his army, for his war. Peace, only so far as you can throw it.
How much is his plan motivated by peace, really? If he thinks about it, really looks with his all seeing eyes, he knows it’s more about revenge. For his people. For himself. For his father. For the war before.
How much of who he is in front of his Quincy is who his father was? How much does it hurt to stand in front of a frozen corpse and feign superiority when quincies are effectively dead as a group and cruelty of people has flown so freely before his all seeing eyes that he is infected with it?
What good are those eyes, really, when his people are gone and he stands on his father’s bones, looking at the corpse of a kingdom. Peace, but only for Yhwach. Only so he can finally shut his eyes for good. Rest for good. Say goodnight and wake up to see his father, instead of a ghost. To see his Quincy, too—he’s taking them with him, after all.
His father’s humiliation is his too. So he cuts Yamamoto in half and tears down the Seireitei with sacrifices dressed up like soldiers. Because he loves the kind of peace it gives him to see it done.
So he can end his father’s suffering, he rattles the bones the shinigami stand on and watch them struggle and fall and fight.
He thinks ‘everything good in me, I took. And everything good I don’t have left, you gave me’. Father in blood, in bone, in memory.
It isn’t fair that they got peace. It isn’t right. To live is to suffer—to see suffering.
But what if he closes everyone’s eyes? What if everyone goes to sleep.
Oblivion, but the kind that makes him and the world new.
Soul society arc: Ichigo finds out Urahara lied to him and is partly to blame for what happened to Rukia. Still he forgives him.
Hueco mundo arc: Ichigo finds out that Orihime is missing and suspected of betraying everyone. Ichigo still believes she’s good and is proven right.
Karakura battle arc: Ichigo finds out his dad is a soul reaper and has been lied to for most of his life. Still he’s the bigger person and lets his dad explain it when he’s ready.
Fullbring arc: Ichigo has a breakdown because all his friends seems to have turned against him.
Anything but the rain arc: Ichigo finds out that his mum was a quincy and everything he thought he knew was a lie. Still he didn’t hold it against anyone. + Ichigo finds out that old man Zangetsu wasn’t his zanpakuto and the one he always thought was his closest ally was in fact holding back his power. Still he accepted both sides of his powers.
Blood war arc: Ichigo finds out that Ishida is working with the enemy. Still he believes in his friend’s goodness and is proven right.
Honestly Ichigo’s biggest achievement is how he’s still kind and trusting of other people. With all he’s gone through I would not fault him for becoming cynical.
Ichigo after yuhwa’s defeat: ”Anyone else? Any more lies or ploys involving me I should know about?”
Kyouraku sweating and avoiding eye contact thinking about how his backup plan was to make Ichigo the new soul king: ”Nope.”
honestly i think ichigo knew from the beginning that soul society didn’t really trust him - he wasn’t at all surprised to find out that ukitake was spying on him. i think, ultimately, ichigo’s greatest strength is that he can always see the good in other people. he doesn’t let their wrongdoings slide, but he doesn’t try to demonize them more than they demonize themselves either.
even after aizen was defeated, ichigo made an effort to try and understand why he was Like That. after gin was killed, ichigo seemed to understand that he’d had another agenda all along - it didn’t excuse what he’d done, but it was enough for ichigo to finally understand him a little, something ichigo himself had already implied he wanted to do.
he’s able to work with ishida, byakuya, renji, urahara, aizen, isshin, the fullbringers, grimmjow, etc., even after everything. it’s not that he’s forgiven and forgotten, because he clearly hasn’t. it’s just that he understands that he doesn’t know everything about everyone and is willing to work with past enemies to accomplish a shared goal.
in other words, he keeps moving forward.
Hii can i request Yhwach fluff headcanons 👉🏻👈🏻 👉🏻👈🏻
yes

-Yhwach refers to spoil his s/o affectionately rather than spoiling through money. He likes to place his hands on your waist, shoulder, hips, anywhere.
-Treats you like a princess, and makes sure everyone knows that you're HIS top priority. One point he'll make you his "queen", one day.
-Is a little possessive, he likes it if you just stay in his room than being outside, but he lets you out with guards following you.
-When he's in his throne room or his viewing room, he likes having tea with you and doing little domestic stuff, but he loves when you're sitting on his lap when he's sitting on his throne.
-If you are SMALL, he WILL give you small headpats or just place his hand on your head and calls you "Little one."
Yhwach further proves his hardcore bonafides by choosing "arrow to the chest" as his preferred method of locomotion. But he's not scary, not the way Ichibe is. I haven't had a Bleach character give me chills like this since the End of Hypnosis.
and you know what!? maybe ichigo WAS supposed to destroy the balance between the worlds. maybe he SHOULD have gone the bastard buffy route and ended it all devilman style.
Yhwach couldn’t help himself while seeing you sleep on his bed, you were just that endearing.
I was horny and I wanted to do something with somnophilia with Yhwach, also WARNING: CNC (consensual non-consent) somnophilia, because you literally do not know, but you guys are wifey and hubby.
ALSO SORRY THIS WAS KIND OF LATE, MY POWER AT MY HOUSE WENT DOWN AND I WAS LIKE FUCCCCCCCCCK
~~~~~~
Yhwach usually slept well, but tonight was awfully difficult. He didn’t know if it was the cold winter air or the soft crackling of the dying fire in the fire pit that was distracting his sleep or the fact that you were next to him, sleeping peacefully. You, laying on your back while your head was turned to face him as you slept. Oh the way it made him smile, the way you make him feel alive, the way you make him uncontrollable, especially cold winter nights when you cling on to him. You constantly plagued his mind and invaded his thoughts, it was a blessing curse and he didn’t care if it disturbed his sleep.
He looked at your sleeping figure and he couldn’t help, but stroked your cheek with his knuckles. “The way you plague me, princess.” he whispered. “I’m beginning to lose sleep, because I can’t hold myself back when you’re next to me.” Yhwach sat up from the bed and gently pulled down the sheets. You shivered at the cold air that breezed through your clothes and he chuckled again as his hand went to the hem of your nightgown. “I apologize in advance, my love, it’ll get a little colder, but it’ll only be temporary.” Yhwach muttered. He placed his lips on your soft one as he lifted up your nightgown up to your collarbone, exposing your bare breasts, stomach, thighs, and most of all, your cunt. “Beautiful. Absolutely heavenly.” he breathed through his soft kiss. He pulled away, checking if you’ve woken up, but to no avail as you were still softly snoring and your face neutral.
Cautious, he settles himself between your thighs, placing your legs over his shoulders and kissing your inner thigh. Despite the cold air, your body was burning and your cunt was beginning to soak as he teasingly and dangerously was close to your folds, kissing your inner thigh. “If you were awake by now, you’d be begging me to taste you.” Yhwach husked. “But tonight will be quite different.”
Yhwach lapped his tongue against your folds, tasting your sweet nectar that was finally releasing. He lapped between your folds a couple of times before he wrapped his mouth around your clit and began to softly sucking. He heard you softly moan as he ate you out and he deeply chuckled as he sucked harder. Your hips twitched and quickly he held them down as he became rougher and faster, he listened to your groaning and your hips twitching and slightly jerking. He hummed in amusement before inserting two fingers. Your walls squeezed around his thick fingers and he slowly pumped in and out, hearing the wet slick lubricate on his fingers.
“Mgnh…ah….!”
You came on his mouth and fingers, he hummed in excitement, he let you off this time since you were asleep. Usually when you were awake and came without permission, he would stop and punish you by edging you even further. The longest he’s edged you was nearly forty minutes and he practically made you cry when you finally came.
He pulled out his fingers and sat up to see the mess he had created. He smirks as he wipes his lips and mustache before licking his fingers, tasting your sweet juice. “Delicious as always, princess.” he muttered. He saw your chest inhaling and exhaling trying to breathe normally and your stressed face going back to being relaxed and sleepy, he chuckled to himself as he knew what was coming next. He took off his pants, revealing his thick cock that was leaking of pre-cum, he spread his pre-cum around the tip of his penis, giving himself a couple of strokes before positioning himself. Your legs were by his waist and one of his hands held yours as he leaned down to you. “Here I come, my love.” he said.
Yhwach slowly entered his member inside of you, slowly slipping inch by inch in your wet cavern. He quickly hummed himself as he watched your face twisted in pleasure while sleeping as his cock was finally snugged in your pussy. “By the gods…your cunt, still so tight even when you’re slumbering.” he whispered. “Uh…huh?” you moaned. You were beginning to wake up and your eyes widened when you saw your majesty on top of you and felt his cock inside. “Your Majesty…?” you yawned. “I see you awoken princess.” He whispered and kissed your cheek. “Was I being too loud?”
“No…not particularly…” you muttered with a yawn. “Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?”
“I couldn’t help myself, little princess. I had to take you right there and then.”
“Hm…I was quite worried who was touching me, but it’s just you indulging a little too much sin.”
“A sin that you’ve bewitched upon me. Something that I don’t mind of course.” he chuckled. You giggled back despite being tired, but you didn’t mind. You kissed his cheek, ignoring the little hairs of his mustache that tickled you while he embraced you. In his embrace, he slowly pulled out his cock until only the tip was inside and pushed back inside of you, and you softly moaned as he repeated the process. “Y-your Majesty.” you shuddered. He shushed you by kissing you which you happily returned back as he continuously thrusted inside of you.
Your walls clenched and tightened as you felt your stomach ache and twisted as he penetrated your sweet spot more and more. “Yhwach…” you whispered. He hummed as you whispered his name and he shoved deeper inside of you. “Again. Say my name again.” he commanded.
“Yhwach.”
“Again.”
“Yhwach.”
You repeated moaning his name as he moved inside of you. Despite the fact you two were exhausted and much needed sleep, you two felt like you were in heaven. Not caring about anything else, but each other. His grip became tighter as you felt his cock twitch inside of you, you knew he was at his limit and you kissed his temple gesturing him to cum. “Yhwach… cum…cum with me please.” you whispered as you were feeling your climax reaching. He kissed your neck as an affirmative answer. After a couple of more rough, but slow thrusts, you felt his cum flood through your cunt, mixing your fluids together.
Yhwach laid on top of you and your hands ran through his long raven hair, relaxing him as he breathed on top. “You did wonderful, your majesty.” you smiled. “You as well princess.” he replied. He gives you a soft kiss on the cheek and just pulls the blankets over both of you and carefully flips you over, making you lay on top of his chest.
“Your Majesty…” you yawned as you felt sleepiness take over your mind and body.
“Yes princess?”
“I love you.”
“I love you as well, my princess.” he whispered before kissing your head as you dozed off.
I would have rather went to sleep since I got a long week ahead but my brain decided now, at 1:30 a.m. out of all time, to fixate on the new added scene in Bleach. Manga and novel spoilers ahead!
Yhwach took in all his godly centuries life, the pain, the suffering, the fear of death of all the people whose souls he absorbed or returned to him. Along with everything that made their soul, their knowledge and history, their kindness, their anger, everything, good and bad and in between. While being an entity of its own, the son of a divine being, thanks to his intimate connection and condition for living, he can also be considered a mass of souls. Although different than that of arrancars! Anyway, what still seemed to prevail from his intake of humanity, was their fear of death and the negative aspects of death. I can imagine becoming unbearable to ignore the tormented souls, all those feelings and knowledge that become part of his being. Its natural he wanted to do something about it. He wanted to help, he wanted to break the cycle. And he knew there was a time when fear of death didn't existed, because everything was one. And he knew the shinigami had something to do with the separation. And he knew he had the power to do something about it.
Yet how was he treated when he went to the shinigami? Ichibe might have said the truth in that the Soul King was the one to separate the worlds, because he had the power to do it. But what Ichibe then showed Yhwach, the part that Yhwach didn't knew until then, was not part of the Soul King's plan. Separating the world in 3, and life and death is one thing. Being chopped and stripped of everything and reduced to a mindless piece of meat to serve as the linchpin and have some shinigami(s) rule the worlds as they want while pretending they follow the will of god was most likely not part of the plan. How can they pretend to follow the will of god when they themselves stripped him of the power to express his will and sealed him? It is an outrageous farce! And they know not everyone would agree with such a state of the world, nor accept such thing as their god, so they hide it. Some that found out the truth became known as Bleach's villains but who can truly blame them?
There are 2 options. To bow their head and ignore or accept such farce only so the worlds will continue as their are. Because there must have been a reason to divide the worlds in the first place (despite the coup by the shinigami), the damage was done, and there is almost no one that could replace the Soul King, which is unfortunately needed to sustain the worlds.
And second option, to rebel. Either as Aizen, to try and become Soul King, a god with will and voice and everything. Or as Yhwach, to reset the worlds completely, erase the farce with everything. If you ask me, Aizen acted for himself, Yhwach acted for the people. Yhwach truly wanted peace for their souls, peace as a world without these conflicts between the 3 worlds, necessary conflicts to maintain the balance, conflicts born of the current situation like with Aizen, and so on.
Anyway, back to the scene with Ichibe and Yhwach... to be treated so condescending, to have his eyes sealed because his power to see past his lies and manipulation was inconvenient and be told to go live in modesty.... I would probably go rabid with rage! Yhwach held himself so well, going as far as expressing relief that his eyes were sealed so he wouldn't have to endure this any longer.
If having the power to do something about it, why should he accept the humiliation to himself? To his father? To his people? Why should he ignore the cries of the souls that return to him? Why would he cease to exist and leave them behind just so he wouldn't feel them anymore? Why in the knowing of truth would he allow this farce to continue and leave shinigami to rule the worlds as they please?
What is the value of courage of living in a world like that? Despite all...
Isn't this the message of the series? I have mixed feelings about it but I'll leave that for another post, along with a 3rd option I thought of.
Quincy illuminated manuscript page. Traditional art. Walbaum Fraktur ink text. The golden parts are made with gold acrylic so they shine.
I’ve used most quincy motifs/symbols for it. Can you spot them all?
Text - Sternritter theme lyrics
[After our world, the next generation
Create their life, their manifestation.
Not with the ills, mistakes, depravation,
That brought us to our final cessation.
Virgin the spirit that blessed upon them.
Pure and untarnished shall not destroy them,
Unless they suffer sin and temptation,
That brought us to our final cessation.
And with gods will they stand a chance of making the sacrifice that they will need…Eternally!!!]
Kaiser Gesang/ The Emperor's song Der versiegelte König von Quincy Erhält seinen Puls nach 900 Jahren zurück Seinen Verstand nach 90 Jahren Seine Kraft nach 9 Jahren Und die Welt in 9 Tagen
Traditional art. Inspired by Yhwach's song and illuminated manuscripts. A4 mixed media, most of the golden parts shine like gold so it looks a bit odd scanned.
I learned a lot of things since I started this so I plan on redoing it with the official German version of the lyrics and other corrections. I refuse to call this a finished version, more like a trial ver. of an illuminated manuscript.
In a series with this. Sketch undercut.
I wanted to do a little sketch for my Bleach Canon Divergence AU but then decided to add color TT
TimeTravel!Ichigo who, because of his injuries and reiatsu exhaustion took a form of a child (like Nell), thus remembering the future, but unable to control his emotions and acting accordingly.
He regains his mental stability later with the help of the Soul King - yeah, he time travelled THIS far - and became a member of the Zero Squad, though unannounced.
Also not-so-subtly called 'your highness' or 'prince' by Zero Squad since Soul King took him under his wing (who also not-so-subtly is being a doting parent) and him being a clingy child most of the time.
He hasn't recovered fully, hence he usually sleeps on the SK's lap or in his arms, surrounded by non-threatening reiatsu so much similar to his (which SK picked up on, already realizing that this child is trully his, needing to be coated in parent's reiatsu to recover faster)
After The First Sin, Yhwach's sealing and establishment of C46 and Gotei, Ichigo lowkey says "fuck it" and just-
Waking the King.
Yeah.
By bombarding the crystal with huge amount of his reiatsu whenever he has the moment.
The funniest thing? He also translating his thoughts and emotions of how everything will be fucked up in about a thousand years and that the King will be killed. But the thought that finally wakes the King up is when Ichigo got too stressed and desperate.
"I need you. Your own son is SEALED and I fought him, I KILLED him, he lost it and he is your fucking son and he needs you even more than me so wake the fuck up- PLEASE I DON'T WANT TO KILL HIM AGAIN HE WAS SO LOST AND DROWN IN MADNESS AND HE LOVED YOU HE JUST WANTED HIS FATHER- PLEASE-"
And it happened quietly. Soul King gently hugging the sobbing kid, peaking a look in the futures.
Yeah... Maybe this was not the best descision he made in order to protect the worlds.
He then proceeds to find his first son which he didn't do to not be 'too bothering of a parent', breaking suspicouisly familliar spells and wards intended to not let HIM find Yhwach, and yanking him in the Palace, also coating him and the youngest in his reiatsu, contemplating his life descisions as to why in the world he listened to Ichibe to let his son wander the world 'a little'. Like, yeah, his son has enormous amounts of spiritual energy but it's expected, and even if Yhwach was absorbing a little too much from him as a toddler that only proved him having a pote-
Oh.
OH.
Wasn't he weakened enough by that to try finding his son and not being able to see even his soul ribbon before being sealed?..
*Somewhere, Ichibe felt shudder runnig down his spine*
***
So the Gotei 13 an C46 aren't aware of Ichigo's existence, he slept through a lot of things (not to mention hawking Soul King being paranoid after disappearance of his first child).
SK's physical body parts slowly deceasing (Ukitake lives yay!).
Ichibe is reduced to an ordinary soul without his memories of ever being something more.
Yhwach is sane, not fatherless anymore, they talked things through, and very much a doting older brother as much as his father even if he doesn't like to admit it (the braids with flowers and colourful ribbons admit it for him)
Ichigo is having a long-lasting childhood since his soul 'matured' even before time travel and he looks younger than Toshiro for like forever (until he figures out how to grow up, waiting for Urahara to become 12th captain to ask him), cringes every time Yhwach calls him "brüderlein" (as if being called his son wasn't traumatizing enough), thinking what to do with Aizen while waiting for the tea-lover to appear.
Oh, and he's also Zero Squad member with privileges (obviously).
Seriously, i made up this whole AU just because i wanted kid!Ichigo in captain haori XD
Anyway, here're the sketches
I cannot get over this scene in the op. YHWACH is doing a dramatic entrance on a fucking helicopter with the first button of his shirt undone (like a whore) and looking so though he’s inviting Uryu on some “grand” adventure as if he’s Uryu’s fucking sugar daddy all while poor Jugram is sitting at the driver seat and probably wondering why the did he bother to bleach both his hair and his eyebrows for this “notice me senpai” bullshit.
Fucking insane way to start the second season. I’ve never been happier in my entire life.
Sometimes characters with just one scene become extremely popular. Why do you think that Masaki took off and has a huge fanbase, while our dear boy Kaien has like 3 fans total? Why isn't he insanely popular?
I admit that personally I have strange tastes, not to be a hipster, for example I liked the chemistry between Fin and Rey and so no romance between Kylo and Rey, and to the internet I'm of apparently disgustingly wrong opinion.
I can't say I have the definitive answer but I can give my two cents:
Masaki has the advantage of being Ichigo's mother and the circumstances surrounding her death are somewhat mysterious.
Ichigo is the main character and she functionally serves as a major source of his angst for... extremely questionable, vague plot and character reasons. (mostly because the plot can't function if anyone bothered to tell Ichigo literally everything he has every fucking right to know, but hey... -.- )
But if I may tangent for a moment: Masaki being a Quincy is something that still has me seeing red. There's a whole other plot progression that could've made more sense and been far more concise without unnecessarily dragging a boring Quincy cast and an Aizen knock-off with a bad mustache out of the dumpster. Which would've also tied everything up in a bow with Aizen's defeat without destroying every modicum of Ichigo's agency... but that's another post for another time.
Circling back to your question: I think if the anime adapted the scenes more faithfully, especially in Soul Society, we'd have seen a larger fanbase for Kaien. A lot of Kaien's references were simply omitted. EG; Ukitake wondering what Kaien would do in the whole scenario (up to and including likely literally kicking Byakuya's ass), Rukia asks his memory why would people come for her, Byakuya flashing back with disgust and a modicum of respect when he compares Ichigo's ferocious will with Kaien's and the abandoned implied reincarnation storyline Kubo set up then abandoned during the Aizen confrontation then we'd have a lot more fans of him.
A majority of fans got into Bleach through the anime, and the anime omitted massive parts of the story that removed meaning from Kaien's character. Worst still, the last thing we see of him is an Arrancar puppeting his corpse. Which means a lot of his 'personality' is relegated to some doppelganger twisting him into monstrous parody. What a note to end on, right?
At the same time, I can see why his presence was so diminished across the manga. He entered the narrative as Rukia's source of guilt, as Ukitake's source of inspiration, as Ichigo's spiritual predecessor, as the one who introduced the concept of heart to Rukia and then gracefully bow out when Rukia allowed herself to take his final lessons to heart (pun intended) and absolve herself of guilt, symbolized in her third Zanpakutou power. (I am shocked however that given Rukia's fight with As Nodt, that we didn't get a cameo in that fear cage, especially considering given, canonically, her most horrific memory was of Metastacia!Kaien... but hey.)
But given how Kubo forgot the Visoreds were the ideal counter to the Quincy and forgot they had their masks, reducing them to chumps, how could I expect him to remember someone like Kaien...?
...
Wow. You admit to liking those characters? I'd delete them all in a heartbeat if I got Kyle Katarn, Jan Ors and Mara Jade instead... but I wouldn't trust Lucas Fims to write their way out of a paper bag if their life depended on it right now.
Yeah, Ichigo accepting OMZangetsu isn't 'I'm accepting a part of myself I've rejected'. No, its 'I'm accepting a foreign entity into my soul and purposely forging a weakness into my own powers that'll allow my greatest enemy to devour them without difficulty or recourse'.
There's no other way I can say it; Ichigo flat out fucked up. Because not only did he forge a the Yhwach soul fragment into his Shinigami powers, he gave Yhwach the perfect means to steal those powers without consequence because the Shinigami part can comfortably contain the Hollow.
I expected Yhwach himself to call Ichigo out as an idiot. To the spirit of: 'Anyone who discovered that shard in their soul were smart enough to expel the parasite as soon as they could. Now I can turn you into my infinitely rechargeable power battery. Thanks for being a dumb shit.'
Yep, yep, yep, and YEP.
I believe Ichigo got so emotionally damaged (like me during that time), that he couldn't really think further into the future. Of what it would actually mean for him (and Zangetsu), to allow OMZ to become a part of his being.
Like whenever I re-read the chapter when he 'accepts him' he literally says:
'I don't care who you are'.
And I'm like .-.
"Sweetheart, you should care. Is a matter of your soul! Of what composes your own frickin soul!!! How can you even say that!??! Do you know what can happen to you with something like that!??! Are you deciding to ignore everything he did to you (and Zangetsu)!?!?!?"
Of course, young me wouldn't have the faintest idea of the dangers that decision encompassed, but as we were proven right, on the later chapters, he gets his powers stolen by Yhwach, thanks to that Quincy part inside of him, and his soul left in a critical state.
Like, Ichigo entered a state of straight up denial after the revelation, he forgot everything, he threw it out the window, along with all his braincells, he didn't think of the consequences, but wait, no no, I don't care about the fate of the world.
I'm mainly talking about his soul, himself, about Zangetsu.
What about him!? What- does he even get a say in the matter..? No. Of course not. It made me so mad back then but the emotional damage from OMZ's betrayal made me misdirect my anger towards Ichigo instead of the one who was actually at fault: OMZ.
He was the reason Ichigo didn't give two fucks about his own soul and started worshipping the soul shard of a decrepit, old, disgusting, Quincy 'king' that only wanted to kill him.
Gods, it makes me so mad cuz I got angry at Ichigo when he was just being deceived and brainwashed by OMZ's words and his crocodile tears.
Zangetsu was perfectly balanced as the shinigami and hollow powers. Idc.
I just can't with this anymore. Is too much.
Zangetsu deserved better and Ichigo deserved to be woken up and give the proper love and attention to Zangetsu.
And Old Man Zangetsu doesn't even deserve to carry the name 'Zangetsu'.
Thanks for the ask btw.
Anyone ever thought about how Bleach's greatest tragedy is Ichigo's desire was to fight fate but has never had a shred of agency his entire life?
Even when Ichigo sincerely believes he's acting of his own accord; he's merely the puppet dancing to another's strings?
Aizen manipulated his parents into meeting, manipulated Rukia into meeting him.
Kisuke manipulated Ichigo from behind the scenes while Ichigo tried to save Rukia, forcing him to learn skills waaaay above his paygrade before he was remotely ready to further Kisuke's own plans. It could be argued that Ichigo's entire existence was planned according to Kisuke's designs.
Isshin manipulated/forced him to learn Deux Ex Saigo no Getsuga Tenshou without telling him the cost, because apparently it was the 'only way' - despite having Kisuke "I plan for ten thousand scenarios" Urahara on his side. And did little in the way of helping his powerless literally soul-torn son cope with the monumental sacrifice after the fact.
Ginjo Kugo and his followers manipulated Ichigo by stringing along the prospect of gaining Fullbring, so they could steal it to have their revenge on Soul Society. Made easier due to the aforementioned apparent lack of support from Isshin.
Sword!Yhwach has manipulated Ichigo the entire time by turning him against his own soul, sabotaging his growth and ability to harness his powers.
Ichibei manipulated him into undergoing that trial to turn him into a Soul King vessel with the intention of chopping him up as the replacement.
Yhwach manipulated Ichigo into killing the Soul King.
"Give me a blade to shatter fate." is a sad joke and poor Ichigo is the walking punchline.
No wonder why no one told him anything about himself until the last minute. An ignorant tool is an easily manipulated tool.
Black and Blue chapter 34.
Ichigo's Quincy side going berserk was planned ever since the Asauchi was introduced into the story.
The path this narrative took aligns with my interpretation of the Yhwach fragments within the Quincy and their culture of historical arranged marriages to keep bloodlines pure.
Bluntly put Yhwach isn't the father of the Quincy. He's the corruption of the Quincy by perpetuating his soul fragments, the mechanism of ashwahellen, into the people. Latching onto Quincy's innate powers like a leech and ensuring they and the powers they've sapped return to him in an endless tithe. Subsequently the Quincy's culture of arranged marriages isn't about the propagandized blood purity, its to keep the blood curse refreshed.
In this chapter, Ichigo 'killing' the old man is breaking that curse on himself. When he eventually gains his full suite of Quincy powers and a Quincy form, they will be of him alone. Making him (with Ishida natively) the first 'Free' Quincy in eons.
Hopefully that gives you more context as to why I moved in that direction.
Plus being a fun inverse to the canon, fighting the Quincy instead of the Hollow.
Another thing that amazes me about Bleach; about Shounen in general, but Bleach specifically: Despite being a teenager, Ichigo somehow found it in his heart to forgive his guardians and caretakers for lying to him his entire life.
Think about this for a minute;
Imagine you're Ichigo. You grew up believing you were human - albeit an extraordinarily gifted one. Then when you're 15-16, in the face of the worst enemy you've fought to date, you discover the hard way that you're not completely human. You're a human-shinigami hybrid with a dash of hollow spliced in. A fact proven when your Shinigami father - apparently a former Captain - swoops into the fray to save you from... talking?
You don't have time to process this event because there's more pressing concerns to handle, but the revelation has thrown you off your game. A tiny part of you has sunken into an existential spiral of doubt, wondering what else in your life you've been lied to about.
Then, in the face of that same enemy, your recently-revealed Shinigami father forces you to learn a technique that sacrifices all of your powers and a portion of your soul - the very things that give your life meaning. You do it because you've been convinced there's no other option and you're too emotionally distraught (and emotionally blackmailed) to even entertain the idea of saying no.
Then a couple years later, you discover, no, you're not human at all and never were. You're a Shinigami-Hollow-Quincy hybrid. A fact you only discover through the enemy's head honcho, who reveals himself to be your great times X grand sire.
Only after you've been thoroughly humiliated in trials organised by the High Lords of the Shinigami, trials they knew you'd fail, after you fought so valiantly to defend them against their new enemy, your father decides to come clean, all the while goading you with your own ignorance.
That intense conversation reveals the true species and fate of your mother, validating that tiny legitimate fear you've had since learning your father's true nature; your entire life is built on a lie.
In addition to that, the horrible tragedy that haunted your days since you were nine years old wasn't your fault in the slightest. Your father knew that with absolute certainty but did nothing to alleviate your guilt, which could've led to you healing that scar sooner. Instead he chose to allow you to continue believing your self-destructive lie, knowing full well what it was doing to you psychologically.
The entire conversation serves as proof the adults in your life, whom were entrusted with raising, caring and protecting you, knew the truth about what you were even before your conception, but did absolutely nothing to prepare you for what such a life would entail.
Even back when you were first thrust into your powers, those same "guardians" did the absolute bare minimum to prepare you before tossing you into the jaws of death over and over again as a convenient superpowered cudgel to solve messes they created.
And what's the cherry on top of this bullshit sundae? The being you're supposed to trust above all else, your own zanpakutou partner... isn't your zanpakutou. Its a parasite that's manipulated you against the one person - the only person - who has never lied to you, for its own selfish ends. And somehow it expects to be allowed to remain in your soul, thanks to shedding some crocodile tears.
That is Ichigo's life.
He has been lied to. He's been manipulated. His entire perception of self and reality has been shattered over and over again. And he's been fundamentally betrayed by everyone whose supposed to care and protect him. In the face of all that, a teenager like Ichigo would not be accepting. He should be angry. He should be furious. He should want nothing to do with these people anymore.
In the face of all this; I would've preferred if Ichigo went through the TYBW arc with the angry attitude of "this is the last thing I do for any of you. Once this war's over, I'm disappearing off the face of the planet because I refuse to associate with any of you again." because any teenager who had their trust so thoroughly betrayed on so many levels would.
I've been openly critical of Thousand Year Blood War since its weekly manga release way back in late 2010s. It was so immemorable that I'd legitimately forgotten it, and by extension Bleach, existed until the announcement in 2022.
The revelations presented require so much backreading and contradicts earlier established facts, it make it difficult to tolerate. Interpersonal reveals reflect incredibly poorly on many characters, demonstrating in some cases outright negligent tendencies in their duty of care towards others and themselves.
(Masaki, Isshin, you don't have to tell him everything but its not hard to teach your god-child basic safety and the supernatural equivalent of 'don't run in oncoming traffic'. The fact neither did of you did, makes you damned irresponsible parents imo. Almost like your powers were retconned into existence without thinking through the rammifications, huh?).
The sum total of my issues are too numerous to mention but my biggest issue is theme of fate in Bleach; how it applies to Ichigo's desire for self-determination and how TYBW in particular gleefully pisses all over that.
While fate and destiny can be aspiring things, they are by definition traps. Confines. Set parameters that must be fulfilled. As a result two primary attitudes exist in response; one must rise to meet the occasion gloriously or defy it to forge one's own path (success varies).
Ichigo's opinion has always fallen into the latter category.
Ichigo wanted to destroy fate. Wanted to negate its unfairness. To remove its strangling shackles from his life and those he cares for. To quote:
If fate is a milestone, then we are the grist. There is nothing we can do. So I wish for strength. If I cannot protect them from the wheel, then give me a strong blade, and enough strength... to shatter fate.
In essence this is how Ichigo wants express his agency and self-determination, by protecting others. He wants to defend the downtrodden from the unfairness ugliness of reality. An agency he gains through obtaining Shinigami power from Rukia.
Or so he believes.
Problem is, every arc and especially TYBW exposes that theme as a total lie.
Whenever Ichigo believes he's expressing agency to combat whatever ill fortunate awaits those he wishes to protect, he is in fact playing into the hands of others.
He believes he's making an active choice to defend and guard and protect, but in reality Ichigo has never had a choice in anything, merely the illusion of one. Worst of all Ichigo never realizes most of his choices are illusions.
With every subsequent arc, the sad truth is that Ichigo is enslaved to fate. Shackled to its designs since the dawn of reality. Enchained by the literal gods and devils on his shoulder. At one point, fate even turns Ichigo's own body against him as his Quincy blood forces him to slay the previous Soul King.
In his drive to break fate's confines, Ichigo becomes its ultimate poster boy and enforcer.
But in a sad yet classic prophetic twist; Ichigo believes he's actively fighting an unfair destiny.
A destiny written by the Soul King's Almighty eons ago.
In a word, the Almighty is omniscience. First held by the Soul King and later Yhwach.
Conceptually, omniscience and free will cannot co-exist. The world is self-determination or pre-destination. There's no middle ground.
This in mind; the Soul King knew precisely how he would die. He knew a Shiba scion would eventually gain the power to release him from his torment eons upon eons after his sealing under the compulsion of Yhwach's Quincy blood, then slay Yhwach to replace him.
In other words, Ichigo's desire for self-determination was the greatest lie of this story. His every action and reaction were predicted and cemented since the dawn of time. Taken to its logical extreme, Ichigo arguably had no free will at all (absolutely fitting because he reads like a damn automaton in the last arc). He's a pre-programmed organic robot blindly following the path set before him by his creators, there's no error codes (ie. questions or hesitations) because his programmers told him exactly the right command prompts to set him loose.
And almost as the ultimate spit in the face for Ichigo's futile wish for agency in his own fate? Yhwach curses him in the end. Cursed Ichigo with a prophesy that at the moment of his greatest happiness, Yhwach will return to crush it to dust.
Meaning Ichigo is now destined to carry that curse for the rest of his days, his days as a human, his days as a soul, possibly even after his soul death and winding up in hell.
By the avatar of fate's own command, Ichigo is never permitted to find true happiness again.
Which actually rather neatly explains why Ichigo seemingly retired from shinigami work after the war concluded. And a rather damning indication of his marriage to Orihime and his own son.
When is Ichigo at his happiest? When he's engaged with the spirit world. What's he done in the ten year timeskip? Cut himself off from the spirit world. When does Yhwach show up again? The first time Ichigo engages with the spirit world after ten long years.
All told, its a rather tragic tale, isn't it?
Then again, I suppose that could be Kubo's intention. The more Ichigo tries to fight fate, the more fate bitch slaps him and tells him 'get back in your lane.' And Ichigo, after years of being thoroughly defanged, bows his head and obeys.
If that's so, then I congratulate him on delivering such a tragic despair-filled message.
Re-reading the final "battle" for Bleach again, because I'm a masochist avoiding writing my own projects like the plague.
I have to ask: Yhwach... why don't you just kill them?!
Legitimately kill them all. Ichigo and Orihime, Rukia and Renji - all of them.
What frustrates me in those final chapters is the fact Yhwach's IQ took a several thousand point hit. For a being that supposedly contains eons of Quincy power and knowledge harvested from his victims (IE. his "children"), why does he make such remarkably painfully foolish decisions in that final battle?
Yhwach has an established track record of killing minions and enemies when they have no further value to him. His own army frequently lives in fear they're next. This behavior was the action we witness during his debut where he killed two affiliated Arrancar over a minor disagreement and it persisted after he became the Soul King 2.0.
So my question is; why the sudden shift in gears? Why has this pragmatist uncharacteristically changed his mind at the eleventh hour and decided to allow the single person who stood a ghost of a chance of killing him live?
Following the final battle in the Soul King's throne room, Ichigo is on the ground exhausted, slashed to pieces and quite literally drained of energy. Boy can barely keep his head up. Yet Yhwach's previously character-defining pragmatism is suddenly evaporates. He had zero qualms stabbing Ichigo through the throat in their first encounter, has zero compunction slaughtering his own men to empower his personal guard or himself, yet now he finds it appropriate to walk away monologuing a cliché speech about wallowing in despair while declaring his children hold no further value.
Emphasizing his statement, Yhwach casts Auswählen to take the remaining Sternritter's powers, killing them in the process. Yet Ichigo - powerless, defenseless and served practically on a silver platter - gets a pass?
(side question: Why wasn't Ichigo affected by the Auswählen as a child? Why didn't he die from the silver clot like Katagiri did? He might be a mongrel of all species but he's still got Quincy blood. More over, why hasn't he died after he got Auswählened again as a teenager?).
Yhwach had the perfect opportunity to permanently remove Ichigo from play; either destroy him so completely his very soul ceased to exist meaning even Orihime can't bring him back, or absorb his soul completely into Yhwach's being, imprisoning him forever because the only person who could've stood a chance at breaking out a powerless Ichigo out is another fully-powered Ichigo.
The mindboggling stupidity extends to the battle itself too.
If Yhwach remained the pragmatist he was during the rest of the arc, he would see Ichigo is clearly relying on his pocket healer for his strategy. Yhwach would snaps his fingers - oops! Pocket healer's dead. Would you look at that? Ichigo's strategy just went up in smoke. As added bonus he's once again plunged into psychological turmoil because A: He's lost another ally, quite possibly the girl he likes, B: He's led another woman he cherishes to her death, this time knowingly, and while he's dealing with that traumatic realization, Yhwach would destroy him, steal his powers then kill him.
(Side question round two: Hollows are anathema to Quincy. They literally cannot survive around them. Why didn't the Hollow act as a poison to Yhwach and kill him? Or play a role in killing him?)
Admittedly, this is my issue with Shounen in general, but why do the antagonists suddenly make the dumbest most confounding decisions in their entire screen time when faced with the main character?
When this happens, I don't the character's flaws - I see the writer saying 'Oh shit, I made them too strong now I have to make them stupid to give my MC a chance.'
Then again, this is Bleach. More over, the Thousand Year Blood War. Asking for consistency is like politely asking Mount Everest to rise up and dance the macarena.
Edit: People can argue that Yhwach 'wanted to see what Ichigo would do' but what would be the point? With the Almighty Yhwach's basically omniscient. He already knows what's going to happen.
Random new year thought that I might make into a fanfic at some point:
Ichigo is meant to be this perfect culmination-slash-combination of everything but imagine an AU where Ichigo's contradicting origins (Shinigami/Hollow/Human/Quincy gag) actively handicapped him. Not the lazy 'Yhawch parasite holding him back' explanation. Simply by his very nature, its impossible for any of his powers to manifest to advanced levels without threatening to implode.
Try to advance his Hollow powers? His Quincy powers deteriorate.
Try to advance his Quincy powers? His Hollow powers deteriorate.
Try to advance his Shinigami powers? His Hollow powers love every second but his Quincy side weakens dramatically.
Try to advance Shinigami and Quincy together? Hollow wants a slice of the pie.
Try to advance Hollow and Quincy? Gets no where slowly because they're anathema - very nearly killing himself in the process.
No amount of 'achieving inner balance' would help him with it because by the nature of his existence, he lacks capacity to do these things. The only reason Ichigo managed to gain a high tier shinigami technique like Bankai in the first place? Yoruichi used a doll to force out a twisted malformed parody out of him.
Which would place a whole new spin on the asauchi trial when he fails: O'etsu reveals Ichigo's bankai shattered so easily because he was never supposed to have one in the first place.
Ichigo can never obtain a true Bankai or Vollstandig or Resurrección because the other aspects of his powers violently reject that from happening. At best he can mix-max his base stats to levels far beyond anything others could achieve but he would never obtain the advanced techniques of a pure Shinigami, Hollow or Quincy.
Ichigo could be like Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. Compared to the powerhouses of Kyle Katarn or Starkiller aka. Galen Marek, Luke is actually quite weak. But he brought balance to the force, he brought down an empire and his very name has the ability to shakes worlds (before Disney ruined him).
In my mind, that is the ultimate power Ichigo should've had. Not copious amounts of actual power piled upon him by being a cosmic paradox and freak of nature. His power comes from his symbolism, his feats of will, his ability to inspire change and unshakeable loyalty through sheer force of personality.
Especially since one themes of Bleach is how power shackles and isolates a person. The complete opposite of that theme would be not necessarily the most powerful character, but one with the greatest ability to forge bonds despite that?
It'd be interesting to see how Bleach's narrative would change from that perspective.
Anyone ever thought about how Bleach's greatest tragedy is Ichigo's desire was to fight fate but has never had a shred of agency his entire life?
Even when Ichigo sincerely believes he's acting of his own accord; he's merely the puppet dancing to another's strings?
