Variation #8: Doctor Clark and firefighter Bruce
The wildfire had been burning through tri-state suburbs and had reached the outskirts of Metropolis mid-afternoon yesterday. Most of the area had been evacuated, and air tankers were there. But then the wind shifted. It went from a humid eastern breeze to a hot and scorching southern wind. Clark had felt it, almost unbearably warm, when he'd gone out on the fire escape for his 10pm break. Pushing the door felt like peering in the oven.
After midnight, the first wave of injured firefighters came in. It was the usual suspects then: dehydration, heatstroke, lungs full of smoke. The second wave came in around 2, and with it the tales of clumsy evacuations and crumbling buildings as the fire advanced through populated towns. Contusions from falling through burning floors, burns from sizzling hot metal.
His shift was almost over when Bruce Wayne was brought in. Clark was just about to sit down with his nth coffee to finish writing up patient notes. Wayne was rolled in on a stretcher by paramedics yelling for a crash cart. His arm had been crushed and lay mangled at his side, bleeding. He wasn't breathing.
Everyone knew who Bruce Wayne was. The story of a billionaire channeling the entirety of his wealth into Gotham's charities and working as a firefighter to pay the bills wasn't exactly common. And Clark was pretty sure he'd seen a couple iterations of firefighters calendars in the locker rooms with Wayne and his salt-and-pepper hair, defined abs and muscular arms prominently featured.
In the ER, nurses and patients alike were frozen, listening to the ongoing ressucitation. Like everyone, Clark let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding when he heard, "Pulse--I've got a pulse!"
He didn't see Wayne before the week after when he was transferred to the ward where Clark did his night shift rounds.
Bruce Wayne wasn't like Clark expected. To be honest, he wasn't sure what he had expected. More exuberance, maybe. Or more of a playboy attitude, whatever that was. But Bruce Wayne was mostly quiet. He was also visibly used to hospitals and medical procedures. And Clark understood why the first time he asked Wayne to lift his shirt to listen to his lungs.
"Wow. Okay, that's a lot of burn scars."
"I work with fire a lot," Wayne deadpanned softly.
That wasn't just working with fire, Clark thought. It was two decades of big and small skin grafts, covering almost all of Wayne's torso, his back, most of his upper arms and at least one leg from what Clark could see. He'd thought he'd spotted make-up on some of those calendar pictures too. The lacy pattern of scar tissue was impressive. It was also terrifyingly sobering. "You must be very dedicated, Mr Wayne."
Wayne said nothing.
On the night of Clark's third visit, he asked him to call him Bruce. Then he said, "What about you, Dr Kent? You have a first name?"
That's when Clark knew Bruce Wayne was flirting with him. "Clark," he said. Clark did work out his fair share, and he wasn't an idiot: he knew he was good-looking. Still, he was dressed in loose fitting scrubs, had a mask over his face half the time with pockets under his eyes roomy enough to fit the latest iPhone, and his breath smelled like cold coffee at least half the time.
But it was in the open now. Bruce Wayne was flirting with him, and Clark knew he was being flirted with, and Bruce knew that he knew. So, "You don't look at me the same way others do, Clark," Bruce said. An explanation. Which could also work as an apology, as if Bruce was bracing for rejection.
"How do others look at you?"
"Like I'm broken."
Looking back, that's when Clark fell in love.

Also im pretty sure Gothamites in canon must think the Waynes /are/ mafia in someway or another. Prodigal son returned built like a brawler? Took in Gotham recruits (kids) from the streets? Doubled the family fortune by a lot? Has a lot of connections, including the JL? Also they're dressed to the 9s 24/7? Random accidents /bruises /cuts when they do red carpet appearance?
Mafia.
You either go with a fully superpowered Clark who’s baffled by human bloodthirstiness, or you depower him and make him an investigative journalist digging into a mafia adjacent story when he crosses paths with the Wayne’s.
I love mafia AUs. More than I should, probably.
I have an obsession with Batfam meets the Justice League fics and headcanons in general, and my favorite situation is when the JL fully knows Nightwing, he's on the team, they all like him quite a bit, and he's so charming and open seeming that they all collectively forget that they don't know anything about him.
I want that, then on a mission, fighting a magic user of some sort, Nightwing gets zapped back to young Robin age. So everyone else on said mission is left confronted with 9 year old Dick Grayson in full Robin gear, who is fully ready to fight every single one of them, and they generally have no idea what's happening or who this child is, other than the fact that he's probably young Nightwing, except he won't answer to that name.
And Dick, extremely confused and suspicious because he doesn't know half of the people there, and the ones that he is aware of are wearing different costumes or are just straight up different people than they're supposed to be, proceeds to try and fight them, then actively try to run away.
Then they finally manage to wrangle him back to the Watchtower, trying to grapple with the implications that Nightwing has been a highly trained, costume vigilante since childhood, and managed to break a bone in Green Arrow's hand before they subdued him, and is still thrashing around and trying to bite various League members.
They call Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in to see if they have any idea what to do with him, and when Robin sees Batman, he squirms out of Flash's grasp, runs to Batman, and climbs up his side until he's wrapped himself around his shoulders like he does it every day.
The Bat lets this happen, sighs in exasperation, then calls Zatanna to help.
The League is then left to piece together why tiny child Nightwing ran to Batman for safety, and why Batman seems a whole lot less confused than everyone else.
Batfamily Beauty and the Beast AU where Bruce is the beast and with every child he adopts he becomes slightly more and more human.
He finds Dick in the woods, sobbing over the loss of his parents. A year later, he looks in the mirror and wonders if he's only imagining that he's gotten shorter.
Jason sneaks into the castle and steals a loaf of bread, hungry and desperate. Bruce takes him in and offers him a proper meal. As he's putting his new son to bed one night, he notices that his claws have shrunk.
Tim marches into the castle and demands Bruce take him, knowing the stories of the monster who kidnaps children. Bruce's snout feels flatter than it used to when he presses a kiss to his forehead.
Cassandra lasts a full two weeks before anyone even notices she's there. The fur on Bruce's arms begins to thin as he holds her close, and she smiles up at him.
Tim brings home Stephanie, who loudly insists that she does not need nor want a new father. His skin grows less leathery, and the beginnings of crows feet appear on the corners of his eyes.
Damian is brought to them by Talia, rigid and wary of everything, convinced of his birthright as the Bat's heir. The fangs in Bruce's mouth seem to smooth over as he learns to gentle his speech.
The day Duke joins the family, still reeling from the plague that claimed his parents, something clicks. Bruce steps out, and before them stands a perfectly human man, finally made whole by his love for his children.
