Let him steal peoples horses and convince david or kathy or sarah whoever to hop on the back. Have him obsessively learning to lasso at the lodge or during slow selling days. He learned cowboy slang and sayings and throws a fit when he cant find his cowboy hat thinking someone stole it. He calls David his beau and likes giving david his hat because it feels significant.

Blush x physical touch

I had planned to make this post about Blush almost kissing in the 1992 movie, but! as I rewatched the timestamps I made a while ago, it appeared Mush and Blink aren't so much almost kissing as always touching. Pick any moment when the two of them are on screen together, and there is a 90% chance they'll be touching in some way. The reason I think Blush became popular as a ship is that the two of them actually do interact all throughout the movie, and they both seem to express affection through physical touch. Now you won't need to ship them as a couple to notice this physical touch, but if you do, you may notice than on many occasions, one of them is very obviously looking at the other's lips (and, most of the time, the one in question is Mush).

At the beginning of the movie, this touch is rather playful, often rather brief and, most importantly, it is initiated by the both of them. That's mostly the shenanigans during Carrying the Banner, where they're already established as a rather close pair.

Then, there's a very casual kind of physical contact, which we see in the whole movie : Kid Blink and Mush are not just standing next to each other, they are often touching in some way, leaning on each other... This is also due to the fact they don't have many lines in the movie aside from talking about the strike, so the most obvious way to show their close relationship is to show them together in the frame, more often than not standing very close to each other : the result being that, from the beginning, they seem to have a closer friendship than with many other newsies (that being said, when he's not with Blink, Mush is quite literally always touching someone. My boy is a hugger.)

This touch is shown as coming to them naturally, in a way that still makes them stand out as a pair even in the most crowded scenes : at the end of King of New York, Blink spends a solid minute with his hand on Mush's shoulder, and they are the only ones holding up one glass for the both of them (to be fair, it's mostly race's fault for not giving Blink a second glass ; however Mush doesn't seem to hesitate or even think before he offers to share his glass, which Blink accepts just as naturally).

Finally, physical touch is also a way to find comfort : in the scene after Once and for all, Blink comes and to stand closer to Mush and offers him some form of reassurance without talking ; what's interesting is that this is one of the rare times when Blink is initiating this kind of brief physical contact.

Though they are both very open about physical affection, there is nothing to suggest a romantic attraction between Blink and Mush ; however ever since I first timestamped the movie I thought this proximity was sometimes ambiguous, especially in those first five gifs where they both look at each other's lips at some point. My guess is that they were asked to take it down a notch after that first day, so that we could focus more on the Javey relationship development...

I kinda hate that there's very few fics where Blush is centric. Like, almost in every fic where they're a couple it's always something minor or only implied.

the difference between livesies!spot and 92sies!spot is that livesies spot will beat the shit out of someone and call it a day, while 92sies spot will psychologically torment someone in the way that only a 14 year old can do, and then beat the shit out of them

He says it on the rooftop, lighting Blinks cigarette for him even though he wants him stop. But the night is so peaceful and the words slips out, the words travel straight to Kid Blinks ears.

Kid Blink blushes and looks at Mush from the side then cuddles closer and agrees with him silently. He repeats it in his head, "forever and always"

No matter what they would be.

sigh... I think that when Blink would first arrive in the lodging house young, he'd find physical touch atrocious. He'd shy away from customary boyish affection, and shrink back from side-hugs or playful nudges. He's been through too much, and flinches away from raised hands, or harsh lights.

That is, until he meets Mush. Mush decides one day that he likes this kid, and wants to be friends. Blink doesn't refuse, mostly because he's not given an option. Few people can deny Mush the things that he wants, because how could anyone be so cruel?

Blink is another story. He has a hell of a time settling in. He bristles at jokes, snaps back. Like an animal with raised hackles, cornered in its cage. He feels safer by himself.

Except, of course, when Mush is in the picture. They spend days together, and soon, nights, when the lodging house becomes so cramped in the winter that they're made to share a bed. Mush doesn't mind. Blink is nervous, up until he finds that he doesn't mind, either.

The rest is history. Their lives become so entangled that they're seldom seen without each other. And when they are, the other isn't far behind. You see it in the bandana Mush wears, that doesn't belong to him. The flower tucked in Blink's pocket. Why the hell would he savor the fleeting violet weeds that bloom in spring? Only one guy does that, and it's not Blink.
