Diamond and gold brooch, Van Cleef & Arpels, c. 1960s (at Yafa)
✧ In obvious ways they were strikingly different: Louis beginning to put on weight, Antoinette slim; he steady, she quick; he reserved, she open; he with few close friends, she with many; he awkward, she majestic; he seeing the dark side, she the bright; he a keen reader, she bored by books; he unmusical, she happy with harp and clavichord. But at a deeper level they possessed traits in common. Both had a lot of heart: they felt for those less fortunate than themselves, they loved their children and were happiest when with them. Both had a sense of duty and wanted above everything to do their job well. – Louis and Antoinette by Vincent Cronin

Princess Alexandra by Lauchert, 1862-1863. (x)
The Crown Princess of Prussia, described Alexandra as having ‘a lovely figure but very thin, a complexion as beautiful as possible. Very fine white regular teeth and very fine large eyes – with extremely prettily marked eyebrows. A very fine well-shaped nose, very narrow but a little long – her whole face is very narrow, her forehead too but well shaped and not at all flat. Her voice, her walk, carriage and manner are perfect, she is one of the most ladylike and aristocratic looking people I ever saw’ and ‘outrageously beautiful’. Queen Victoria thought her a 'dear, lovely being’.
