A new mural popped up in Philadelphia. I love my city.
1/13/17 @coldsunnyday The ducks aren’t actually green. They’re untrustworthy creatures, and they’re lying about what color they are. Don’t listen to them.
It’s an optical illusion called “structural color.” Their feathers are black. The fluffy side bits of the feathers (barbs) are also black. The little hooks that keep the barbs all lined up (barbules) are also black. There are microscopic little ridges (tubules) on the barbules that are also black. But the tubules are exactly the same size as a wavelength of green light, so instead of absorbing green light the way a black object should, they reflect it and the ducks look green.
If you put one of the ducks under a good enough microscope, you’d see that no individual part of it was actually green in any way.
Avian biology generally can’t produce blue or green pigments. Birds that look blue or green are lying about it. Don’t trust them.
Except for turacos. They’re actually green, and very pleased with themselves about it. Look at this guy, here’s a bird you can trust:
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

Edit: People, I’m an English and creative writing double major in college; I understand that there’s nothing wrong with simply using “said.” This was just for fun, and it comes in handy when I need to add pizzazz.
Capitalism at its best. Some role models we should all consider. I am a fan of Hagen Daz, but after reading this, I need to get me some Cherry Garcia!
I hate that some people are so purposely obtuse that they need disclaimers for every single thing, like when women say “men are…” you know good and goddamn well they aren’t referring to every single man. It’s billions of us, how the fuck would they know all of us?
Whenever I hear these statements, I interpret it as “Not all men, but enough men to make this a prominent issue amongst men”
Same shit with “white people are…” Get the fuck out your feelings and actually listen so you can address the concerns of these people instead of defending people that ain’t shit.
Previously, I’d only seen the first two panels and assumed it was the complete comic.
This version is much better.
ADDENDUM: As this approaches 100,000 notes as of this writing (less than three days after it was first posted), there are a couple of things that need to be added, and I prefer to add them to the original post, rather than to a reblog.
FIRST… there are a number of reblogs and replies–mostly from white males who see their precious capitalism threatened–that ignore the point of the comic and go after the fact that the people pictured didn’t pay for a ticket to get into the stadium.
If you need to see the point without the barrier (hah) of this particular comic, imagine this scenario instead. The scene is the maternity ward of a hospital. A joyful father is looking into the nursery window to see his newborn daughter…
First panel (equality): The father’s older child–a son–is standing next to him, wanting to see his new little sister. The boy is too short and can’t see into the window, but he and Dad are on equal footing. This is “equality.”
Second panel (equity): Dad picks the kid up so he be at an equal height and peer into the window at his sister. This is equity.
Third panel (removal of the systemic barrier): Instead of a window, the entire wall is made of transparent glass. The nurse brings the newborn over to show dad, and then squats down to show little brother as well.
Better? Everyone complaining about them watching the game “illegally” can now shut the fuck up.
SECOND… there have been a couple of inquiries about the source. Turns out, the original was indeed the first two panels only. It was an MS Paint image thrown together by a business professor named Craig Froehle to illustrate the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcomes. The three-panel version featuring the removal of the barrier is one of many adaptations.
For the somewhat fascinating story behind the original and how it came to be adapted in myriad ways, see https://medium.com/@CRA1G/the-evolution-of-an-accidental-meme-ddc4e139e0e4
That’s it!
Delaney Robinson, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill alleged Tuesday that a football player at the school raped her in February and that UNC has done nothing about it. In a powerful personal statement she explained how “she did everything a rape victim is supposed to do.”
That’s how the book collection #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign was started by an 11-year-old from New Jersey.
Marley Dias is a smart and beautiful young lady. I loved hearing about Marley’s campaign and the joy she has about reading. Her upcoming book club for black girls will also be a success. Keep reading and making a difference Marley!
And this cosplay edition is for blerds!
There are so many critics, haters and racists in this sphere, so sometimes it is hard enough to represent yourself if you are black!
Cosplay is about dressing up as your favorite characters, and it doesn’t matter what is your skin color or body type or who the character is so long as you enjoy it!

1. Do not kill bees, they aren’t trying to hurt you and rarely sting (because they die if they sting) chances are they’re buzzing around you because you’re wearing a bright colour and they think you’re a flower
2. If you see one on the ground, it’s probably not dead, try feeding it some sugar water or put it on a flower so it can get energy
3. Put bee friendly flowers in your garden so they have lots of pollen and maybe put a bee house too
4. If you have a bees nest in your attic/garden/shed etc, don’t call an exterminator! Call a bee keeper instead so they can be rehomed rather than being killed
Bees are very important and must be looked after! Without bees, humans wouldn’t survive
