Musical Monday's Week 7!

Hey everyone! I hope you're all okay and that this week has treated you kindly! I'm posting a late edition of my Musical Monday's this week. I'm sorry that it's been posted on a Saturday and not Monday, but I've not been feeling too great this past week. Anyway since I'm feeling a bit better, I'm able to post this weeks lesson! Whoop Whoop!🎉🎉🎉

I've tried my best to research my post and put up as many example sentences that I could think of for each word. But since I'm still a little under the weather they're could be a few mistakes. So if you spot any or a better way to translate a sentence please lemme know so I can fix them!

Note on translation: I have used a combination of my own sentences, Naver Dictionary's and Papago translation. Where sentences are not my own I have labelled where I've found them from.

My Thoughts on the song: Well Well Well, What a fantastic track this is! I've not heard of it before (Truth be told I didn't know there was a SJ sub unit or units! I know I know I'm so sorry!) I'm so glad I got to listen to this magnificent creation, cos now I want to listen to all of Super Junior's D&E songs back to back! I love the guitar and the piano in this song and their voices are so so beautiful. Overall 10/10! Thank you so much for introducing me to such a wonderful song, and a wonderful vocal pairing! 🤩🤩🤩

VOCABULARY:

발걸음 step/ pace

미나는 누군가가 그녀를 따라오고 있다고 생각했기 때문에, 그녀는 발걸음을 빨라졌어요. Mina thought someone was following her, so she accelerated her steps. Mina thought someone was following her, so her steps became quicker. (Mine with help from Papago)

미나는 누군가가 그녀를 따라오고 있다고 생각했기 때문에, 그녀는 발걸음을 재촉했어요. Mina thought someone was following her, so she hurried her steps.

유나야! 발걸음을 늦춰주세요! Yuna! Please slow down!

미나는 발걸음이 느려고 있어요. Mina is walking slowly. (or) Mina is trying to walk slowly.

유나는 오디션에 합격했서 발걸음이 가벼웠어요. Yuna passed the audition, so her steps were light. (Meaning: Yuna passed her audition so she felt light hearted)

언젠가 sometime/ some day/ once/ one day

한국에 언젠가 가고 싶어요. I want to go to Korea someday.

떠내려가다 be swept away/ be washed away

Present Tense: 떠내려가요

Past Tense: 떠내려갔어요

Future Tense: 떠내려갈 거예요

미나의 할머니의 집은 홍수에 떠내려갔어요. Mina's grandmother's house was washed away in the flood.

닫히다 close/ shut/ bang/ slam

Present Tense: 닫혀요

Past Tense: 닫혔어요

Future Tense: 닫힐 거예요

바람에 창문이 쾅 닫혔어요. The window slammed shut in the wind. The wind slammed the window shut. (Modified Naver example)

유나는 사랑에 마음을 닫았다. Yuna closed her heart to love. (Yuna shut herself off from love) (So poetic…)

귀찮다 troublesome/ tiresome/ to be a hassle

Present Tense: 귀찮아요

Past Tense: 귀찮았어요

Future Tense: 귀찮을 거예요

유나의 남친은 참 귀찮은 존재 것 같아. Yuna's boyfriend seems to be very annoying.

야! 다시는 귀찮게 하지 말라고 했잖아! Hey! I told you not to bother me again! (Mine with help from Papago)

밀어내다 push/ shove/ force

Present Tense: 밀어내요

Past Tense: 밀어냈어요

Future Tense: 밀어낼 거예요

그 반란군들은 왕을 밀어냈어요. The rebel army pushed out the King. The rebel forces ousted the king.

쫓다 pursue/ chase

Present Tense: 쫓아요

Past Tense: 쫓았어요

Future Tense: 쫓을 거예요

지금에 경찰은 범인을 쫓고 있어요. Now the police are looking for the criminal. The police are chasing the criminal now.

콘서트에서 보안팀은 큰 군중을 쫓았어요. At the concert, the security team dispersed a large crowd. (Lit: At the concert, the security team chased a big crowd.)

집주인은 세든 사람을 쫓아냈어요 The landlord evicted the tenant.

김 유나 언니는 최신의 유행을 쫓아요. Kim Yuna unnie follows the latest trends.

급하다 urgent/ pressing/ rash

Present Tense: 급해요

Past Tense: 급했어요

Future Tense: 급할 거예요

오늘 아침에 유나는 급한 메시지 받았어요Yuna received an urgent message this morning.

그래요, 이것은 정말 급한 요구이예요. Yes, this is a really urgent request.

급한 대책 an emergency measure (Naver)

굴복하다 submit/ yield to/ surrender to

Present Tense: 굴복해요

Past Tense: 굴복했어요

Future Tense: 굴복할 거예요

나는 위협에 굴복하지 않아! I don’t give into threats!

낡다 old/ worn out/ shabby/ old-fashioned/ out dated

Present Tense: 낡아요

Past Tense: 낡았어요

Future Tense: 낡을 거예요

미나는 낡은 차를 샀어요. Mina bought an old/ shabby car. Mina bought an old banger.

그 낡은 옷을 버려. 나 너한테 새 옷은 살 거야. Throw away those old clothes. I will buy you new clothes.

우리 할머니는 낡은 집에 살아요. My grandmother lives in an old house.

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING THINGS I NOTICED IN THE SONG:

수없이 in large numbers 수없이도 countless times

우주에서 수없이 많은 별들이 있어요. There are countless stars in the universe.

저는 수학 시험을 수없이 되풀이할 거예요! I'm going to repeat the maths test countless times!

시계바늘들 clock hands

그저 still/ without stopping/ always

미나는 그저 웃기만 했어요. Mina did nothing but laugh. Mina just laughed. Mina just kept on laughing.

어제밤에 그저 눈이 온다. It kept on snowing last night.

어제밤에 그저 눈이 왔어요. It just snowed and snowed last night. It kept snowing last night.

낙서 doodle/ scribble/ graffiti

이 학교에 낙서 금지 있어요. There's no graffiti allowed in this school. Graffiti is prohibited in this school.

공책 notebook

저는 공책에 그림을 그렸어요. I drew a picture in my notebook.

GRAMMAR:

1.) 겠

Indicates future tense

Used for formal announcements regarding future tense

E.G Train overhead announcements

Presidents spokesperson announcing the arrival of the president to an event

Used when the speaker expresses a promise

Used when speaker announces their intention

I will wait here for you.

I will meet you

It is also used with negation particle 못 to demonstrate the speakers inability to do something or their unwillingness to do something.

I can’t talk to her because it makes me angry

I can’t go there because I’m scared of heights

Can be used when the speaker is making a formal offer/ formal request

‘What would you like…?’

Can be used to express sentences like “I BET!”

To show more politeness “알겠습니다” I Know/ I understand

이 카페는 멋이겠는 것 같아요. I think this café will be cool. (This café seems like it will be cool)

그 음식은 매우겠어요. That food must be spicy.

Formula:

겠 is not used here as a final sentence ending.

Instead it is sandwiched between Verb Stem and then the final sentence conjugation.

VS + 겠 + Conjugated sentence ending

E.G VS + 겠 + 아요/어요.

2.) -지/ 죠

Turns a statement into a question

It is the speaker asking for the listener to agree with them

This soup is spicy, isn’t it?

지 = Informal 죠 = formal

Can use it if you’re asking yourself a question, so long as the sentence contains a question word in it/ Or can be used when asking yourself what you should do.

3.) 겠 + 지 = Speaker asking themselves or someone else if something will happen in the future. It will….right?

Examples in the song:

언젠가는 지나가겠지 Someday, It’ll pass (Nuance: Someday, it'll pass, right?)

시간에 못 이겨 잊혀지겠지 (잊혀지겠지) I can't win over time, so I'll forget it (I'll forget)

(Nuance: I can’t win over time, so I’ll forget, right?)

Korean Study Notes

It's so confusing how M and B sound so similar in Korean sometimes. I've never realised how close  phonetically these letters are to each other. So 미친, 뭐 and 몰라 become almost bichin, bwo and bolla. 

Same thing with N and D. 네 often becomes de.

Denasalization is a funny thing.
